Crossfire two r9s

Can i crossfire two different models from the radeon r9 series (eg r9 270x with r9 280x) or does it have to be the exact same model as well?

You cannot crossfire them 2 cards you listed together.
The cards don't have to be the exact same but they have to be from the same family of cards, eg: 270 + 270x, 280 + 280, 290 + 290x.
There are also older cards from the HD7000 series that can crossfire with some of the r9 series cards, eg: 7850/7870 + 270/270x.

no. for crossfire to work it needs to be the same exact GPU core (aka the r9 270x can crossfire with a r9 270, HD7870 and HD7850, but not a 280x):
