I brought a stick of second hand ram and fitted it into an old pc but when I try to run the Windows Memory Diagnostic scan I am getting a 'hardware problems detected' message.

The ram stick is an 8GB Crucial Ballistix with the model number: BLS8G3D1609DS1S00

I believe that this ram stick would have originally been part of a 2 stick kit, (example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155640463001)

Has anyone used sticks from a kit separately? I'm wondering if that may be the reason for the error?

Thanks for the replies, the ram did arrive in an anti static bag,

The computer spec is...

  • MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0
  • CPU: AMD FX-9590
  • HDD: Crucial BX500 500GB
  • PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800w

is the 8GB DIMM the only module fitted in the mobo?

If so and Windows has already detected errors, it probably needs replacing. You could run MemTest86+, but will probably just confirm Windows diagnosis.

Do you have any other memory, even if it's less than 8GB? 2x2GB or 1x4GB would be enough to get the system up and running and run a few checks.

I took a risk and brought another set of second hand ram sticks, this time they are: BLT8G3D1608DT1TX0

I don't know if they are older than the BLS8G3D1609DS1S00 or not, but I have put both BLT8G3D1608DT1TX0 sticks in separately and ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic, they both pass, I then put them in as a pair and ran the test again and it passed.

Is there any reason the BLS8G3D1609DS1S00 may not be compatible with the motherboard? or is likely to be a faulty stick?

Im just ballparking here, but your mobo's manual says this:

This motherboard does not support DIMMs made up of 512Mb (64MB) chips or less
(Memory chip capacity counts in Megabit, 8 Megabit/Mb = 1 Megabyte/MB

Basically its about ram density. Few years back when i was upgrading the ram on my p7h55m-lx, i found out (from the manual) that it only supports "low density" ram. In other words, i needed dual sided modules as opposed to single sided (high density). In today's terms that would be known as single rank vs dual rank.

If you're curious, you could check if that's the difference between the two kits/modules. Or it might be just faulty, ofc.
