Hi everyone,

Two nights ago, my PC suddenly crashed with a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Here's what happened afterward:

  1. On the first reboot, the system loaded but then completely froze.
  2. I restarted it again, but this time it got stuck on the motherboard's boot logo screen and was unresponsive.
My system drive was a Crucial M600 1TB SSD, which has been in use for about 2 years. After I physically removed the M600, my computer was able to boot up without any issues.

To be sure, I took the SSD to a local computer shop. They tested it and confirmed the drive is dead. They didn't have a replacement in stock, so I had to buy a new 1TB SSD from another store for $55. (Kingston NV3)

My main question is: what could cause an SSD to fail so suddenly and completely like this?

The drive seemed to be working perfectly fine before this. For a drive that's only 2 years old, was this just bad luck, or could it be related to a controller failure, NAND wear, or something else? I'm just trying to understand the potential cause.

Thanks for any insights.

The answer to that can be a multitude of things. It failed due to heat, electrical issues, controller decided to go South, firmware corruption, reached a MTBF number or the sample you had just conked out(silicon lottery).

Just to clarify, I know that the drive you have is under a 5 year warranty so if you used it for 2 years, you're yet able to send the drive in for an RMA(after contacting Crucial).

Yep, the plan is to RMA it this week. I got it from a third-party seller, so it only has a 3-year warranty, but that was the trade-off for the cheaper price. Since it's only 2 years old, it's still covered.
