The ssd drive comes with a black sticker on the top of the board that says Crucial P5Plus M.2 2280. (Does this need to be removed??). Is there a problem installing it into the number three slot on my Asus Z690-A mother board.

Don't remove the sticker. You're going to be fine with it on the drive. What are the other M.2 slots on the motherboard occupied with? Prior to drooping any ram or SSD upgrades onto the board, please make sure you're on the latest BIOS version for said motherboard.

According to the manual, what is the formal name of this "number three slot" and what specifications do you see for that slot?

Also, look for any warning or footnote that using this "number three slot" may disable a SATA port. It may or may not, depending on your particular motherboard.

Here's The Specs for SSD Install (Where should it be installed??

Asus Motherboard = Rog Strix Z690-A Gaming WiFi D4

SSD Drive = PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive ( To Install)

Asus Motherboard Specs

Chip Set = Z690

Intel 12th Gen Processors:

M.2_1 supports PCIE 4.0 mode M Key design and type 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage device.

M.2_2 supports PCIE 4.0 x4 mode M Key design and type 2242/2260/2280 storage device.

M.2_3 supports PCIE 4.0 mode M Key design and type 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage device.

M.2_3 supports PCIE 4.0 and SATA mode M Key design and type 2242/2260/2280 storage device.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology supports Intel Optane Memory H Series on PCHattached M.2 slots.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology supports NVMe Raid 0/1/5, SATA Raid 0/1/10.

When M.2_4 operating in SATA mode, SATA6G_2 will be disabled.

From the looks of that spec sheet, you could put the drive in any of those 4 ports. All offer PCIe 4.0 speed.

I assume you made a typographical error and the last one should be M.2_4, not a second M.2_3.

The only caveat is that if you use M.2_4, your SATA port 2 will be disabled. It's very likely you don't have to use that port anyway.

I'd try to put it in the port that was in direct line with a fan for best cooling if possible. PCIe 4.0 drives can run a bit warm.

Your probably right about M2_3 should be M2_4. Re looking at the Asus Manuel it reads just like I wrote. As far as SATA ports I use 5 SATA ports as of now. One SATA port will be replaced by the SSD drive. So M2_4 is a no go with my setup correct.
