Also dont forget this is EA. They want your money. They don't care if you can build it cheaper

you say you can build that under $600 ? Then post the prices and specs
just be sure to include the MS XP
and do it without rebates and be sure to include shipping

you might be able to save a little, but you sure aint saving a lot
and this pc is obviously not for people who build pcs

its meant for people who want to play a game without worrying whether or not their pc meets minimum requirements and for people who don't want to be bothered with buying stuff and possibly having to RMA it

this is a very good pc at a very good price

Try pricing with a Phenom x4 9850 Black Edition on a Gigabyte 790GX/SB750 chipset and a ATI-HD-4850. (Or a Phenom 3x TripleCore).
Add 4 Gigs DDR21066.
(note that all of this is new summer 2008 hardware)

That would be new current tek with an upgradeable future. Add a 2nd Crossfire 4850 card next year = zoom.

A decent amount of people comparing system builds seem to forget to include the price of the OS. To most Tom's readers it's fun to build a PC, but some people are unsure of themselves and would prefer pre-built. This is a great deal compared to what some of the big PC dealers will charge.

If you built a rig yourself you could probably upgrade to a slightly better GPU w/free game, a BluRay drive, and Quad-core CPU for the same price of the build. But somebody has to get paid for building this model, so naturally do-it-yourself is more affordable.

think about it; a highschool dropout can assemble a computer, and do more than 1 and hour. probably at least 1 every 10 minutes. so figure $1 to assemble each computer off shores, and since all the components are made in asia, that cost will be more than recouped by reduced final product volume in shipping, and reduced packaging. and not to mention, fewer packages to keep track of.

they don't even have to go through all the BS involved with installing the OS, its preloaded already installed and configured on the HDD.

and I bet XP costs the big manufacters $50 or less, or you'd see lots more linux cheap machines for sale.

and I'll also bet Intel cuts them a deal too. an AMD comperable to the E7300 would be lots less than $140. you can buy a 2.8 5400+BE on newegg for $77 right now

heck you can get a Sonata III + EA500 with a 5400BE for $80 after MIR,

I know its hyperbole but the 10 a minute comment just had me laughing.

My buddy pointed me to this thread as he is thinking about buying it.
Over all I had to tell him it is a good deal as he does not know how to put a pc together. This is clearly not targeted for the do it yourself crowd.

you realy think 10 minutes is laughable?

think about it. we are talking assembly lines here. all components laid out. PSU with wiring the correct length. no little single single switch front pannel wireing. more snaps and clips than screws. no custom wire routing. 10 minutes to slap together a PC is very doable, even more so if you doing the same thing over and over and not being overly carefull. heck, they don't even mess with thermal compound, just the thermal pads. when I assemble a PC, most of the time is spent reouting the wires all fancy like, and digging for the correct screws.

clip in the CPU + heatsink and memory. 8 screws to hold down the mobo. 4 screw for the HDD. spap in optical. snap in the graphics card. plug in the front pannel, 2 satas for drives, power cords for mobo, cpu, 2 drives, gfx card. and a fan or 2.

you really think that takes more time than an oild change and vehicle inspection?
