I recently built a custom PC and installed CS:GO and played a few games. I was getting about 150-200 FPS on high settings. After a few days, my FPS slowly began dropping. Now i get about 20-40 FPS. I reapplied new thermal compound on my CPU and CPU cooler. But the same problem seems to occur/ What could be the problem?

Right now I am playing with the lowest settings. Even in the menu, i get about 100 FPS which i usually get about 300-400

I didn't set one.

i meant change it from the console "~" to fps_max 120 or 90 to limit the frames , no point keeping it at "fps_max 300"
, its just a tweak ,and it's better done from outside the game from the launch option

okay. Also youtube stopped working. I tried closing it and opening it again and just wouldnt load..

Are there any like settings that need to be changed to increase my FPS or is it just the temperature of the CPU that affects the game because CS:GO is mainly based on CPU from what i researched..

am not quiet sure , but when i first installed CS:GO , and the fps_max was on 300 , my CPU heating up like crazy and when i limited the fps_max to 120 , CPU heat went ok , and the game play was fine to so i decided to reduce the fps even lower to 90 , since the image is the same so why bother to fry my own pc for additional non useful frames ?! , thats why i told you to limit the fps to reduce cpu/gpu heat , hope i helped somehow

Have you checked your PC for any viruses?
And how much is your HDD space taken up?

It is not normal for that configuration to run old(ish) game on low with 20-40 FPS...

Also, having above 60 FPS is nice in case of any drops, which won't be visible due to monitor (I assume you have a 60 or 75 Hz monitor) not actually display any stuttering.
But there is a limit. No point for PC to torture itself only to get frames monitor can't even display.

I checked my PC with Malwarebytes and there aren't any viruses or detections of anything. My HDD is 1TB and at the moment it has only taken up about 40GB including windows 8.1

But its fixed now so thanks!

Please share your fix, i am in a similar situation
