Hi, Really hope someone can help. I am building a computer for editing. I will be using after effects which I hear works much better to render video and 3d stuff with CUDA technology. I think it works with CPU for rendering or something. The thing I don't understand is. Why is the GTX 580
More expensive than GTX 760. They both seem to have this CUDA technology. What are you paying for in the £200 price difference? Any recommendations on the subject would be amazing. Thanks

Thats amazing. Thanks very much all. Im happy to pay extra if it means getting better performance for editing. So what are the extra capabilities? Just so I know what Im paying the extra money for. Im already going to get as much ram as possible, around 32 gig. a couple of SSD's and the Sniper 5 m motherboard, if any one is interested. Will need lots of power! Need to check if the card will fit into my motherboard first but don't worry if it doesn't Ill get a different board.

Ill be using after effects mainly as I hear it will take advantage of cuda.

Really appreciate it. So 580 is better choice. suppose I'm just curious what i can get out of it

Found a blender comparison for a couple of different cards:

Came from this website. http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?304005-NVidia-GeForce-GTX-560-580-590-2x590-3x590-Benchmark-in-Blender-Cycles-2-68
Can't find the tom's article though.

If you really need the power the Titan's are not crippled hence part of the price premium over a regular 780

Haven't bought anything yet mate. Im getting a business start up loan. Spending around 3k on a rig. 500 of that will be sound stuff, audio interface and speakers, and then a few more on a hd tv and a good monitor. Im going to go for the i7 4770k, I was gunna go for the one above that but I hear the over clocking is amazing on 4770k if I'm in need of more power.

So Spectre, thanks for the help btw, in your chart the 3770k outperforms the 580. Does that mean I don't need a graphics card at all? Is the point of buying the 580 so that it works with my CPU to speed up rendering with this cuda technology. I really don't know much about graphics cards. People kept telling me i wouldn't need more than a £100 one. But after researching now it seems ill need a pretty good one, as it can effect colouring etc, and ill need it for a good HD output for double monitor. Its all a bit confusing.

Haven't bought ram yet if you wanted to recommend any, again I thought ram was pretty much as good as each other. I know that a high speed is better but then this effects caching or something, you obviously know all this stuff off the top of your head. lol So what would be a good compromise ram wise for editing.
Thanks again everyone.

Not a problem but that chart is a lower is better the 3770K did the worst roughly 2.6 times slower than a 580. OC a 4770K does lead to some pretty impressive gains. requires good cooling though.

What CUDA/OpenCL does is basically allow highly parallel tasks like rendering run on a GPU instead of a CPU.

haha, I see :) , thanks so it looks like its pretty amazing then. And the other cards on the list seem to be around the same price range so its a good bet. If you think it worth forking out over the £200 cheaper one then I gotta do it.
Yeah as cooling, I'm a little scared of water cooling as its my first build. But I'm getting some good fan action on it. Was gunna see what the Stock CPU fan was like before buying a new CPU fan though an then kitting out the rest of the fans as best I can.

i believe you would be better on the x79platform rather than 1150 ,
ivy bridge i7 4930k hex core
2133mz ram or 2400mhz ram
better board with better SLI capabillities if you want to add a card later on
more cores the better when rendering plus hyperthreading

ok, ill trust you guys. I liked the sniper 5 m because of the good sound. What are the advantages of getting the x79? Im not likely to SLI any time soon but maybe a good option to have if CUDA can use graphics card to speed up rendering. Maybe i can buy another 580 in a year or so and SLI for extra speed. Hex core probably is worth it too. its less gh's? Does it work out faster because of the hex core. What kidna gains are we talking and should I over clock it ?

Ill probably post my final build on here to be sure. But looks like I'm nearly there.

x79 platform (any ones ud recommend?)
i7 4930k hex
580 Cuda thing
32 ram 2133mz or 240mhz
guna need 700 w at least i think
Some good fans.
SSD
Couple of Terabite drives. maybe 3 on a raid 5 or something

Would you change this at all if it was you build? I only have one chance to build amazing editing computer. Cant change it later. LOL Thanks again for all your help guys. Any other recommendations welcome.

Well Ive got around 3k give or take. But 500 - 600 on sound stuff so lets say 2k - 2.5k so i can get some nice speakers when I'm done ;)

Totted it all up at just under 2k with the list i put earlier. Im thinking maybe the ASUS Xonar Essence STX Premium Case if you wanna check it out. Looks pretty good. Not sure if it needs a mATX so u can fit the optical drive. Its a nice kit tho and looks professional Im thinking. Yeah id really appreciate it if you can mate. Its quite fun picking parts as its guna be such a good PC but my knowledge only goes so far. Cheers again mate

oops, I posted the sound card I was looking at. lol The case is the Fractal Design Node 605 case - for around 130. If it does need an mATX and you think thats a bad shout then let me know. IF its only hard drive ports you lose then I'm not that fussed. Id tend to have portable ones that I can store away. Cheers mate

looks like it might be able to fit a larger board in there along with the drive. I should mention that Im also looking to be using a quality audio interface (external sound card) for some sound recording. Not sure if that makes a difference to the board choice or not tho.

this is what i found from amazon UK

Asus Rampage 4 gene x79 2011 m-atx 230.86
i7 4930k Ivy bridge E 413.18
Mushkin 994122 DDR3 32gb 2400mhz 316.94
Corsair Pro AX760 Fully modular PSU 122.71
Corsair H105 94.95
Mushkin Chronos 120gb ssd -2 Of 126.16
WD 2t sata3 green 64.99

total 1369.79

All there but your sound and graphics card and if it were me i would opt for a better case to fit the corsair 105 and better airflow
