I have a personal project I want to complete: I would like to build a custom compact gaming PC compatible with Windows 98. Yes, I already know that it would be much easier to simply use a virtual machine to play old MS-DOS games, but where's the fun in that? Since old PC parts are very cheap, I thought making a performance PC for Win98 might be fun. I would prefer part recommendations that would function with Windows 98 without any bugs or compatibility issues.

I would like the finished build to look somewhat like this:

Here's the compatibility information I need to know in order to build this PC:

    1. What is a good DDR motherboard with IDE PATA support (with the ability to connect up to 2 diskette drives, and a PCI connector)?

    2. What is the maximum amount of RAM and clock speed compatible with Windows 98?

    3. What kind of hard drive should I get? I am aware that the drive must be below 137GB and must be IDE. But I also need the drive to be "non-Logical Block Addressing".

    4. What is the best CPU compatible with Windows 98 (any speed)

    5. I need an IDE CD/DVD drive compatible with the included drivers that the Windows 98 installer CD has built in the setup. I have ran into the optical drive issue in the case where the built in ATAPI drivers do not support the CD drive.

    6. What is a good PCI GPU compatible with Windows 98 that supports 3D graphics for games such as Quake?

    7. As described in the picture linked above, I need a case that could house all these components inside. It doesn't matter what kind as long as it has 2 diskette drive slots, and one optical drive slot.

Thanks!:)

Seems reasonable. Fortunately, there is a Grid store not too far from where I live. I'll go ahead and check it out.
