Hi all,

Yesterday I built my very own custom built pc and I came here to ask a question about CPU temps

Here are the specs
Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming-5
CPU: i7 4790K (4.0Ghz)
CPU Cooler: Stock
GFX: Geforce GTX 970
Memory: Corsair Vengence (16GB)
PSU: EVGA NEX650G
OS: Windows 8.1

I'm currently getting a variance in CPU temps, generally web browsing can be from 35c to 60c depending on what im doing (watching videos, lots of tabs). And in gaming I generally see around 60c to 90c. Everything seems to run fine but I'm a tad worried about the CPU temps but maybe I'm just paranoid, are these temps expected on a stock cooler?.

Any help would be really appreciated, Thanks a bunch.

I have the same CPU and if I get to 80C I get nervous, if you're popping up to 90C, that seems high. I mean especially in gaming as most games stress the GPU not the CPU more. Is your case well ventilated and what's the ambient temperature? Even a stock cooler shouldn't be hitting 90C especially if you're not overclocking.

no there not right. check that the legs are locked in and the pins of the cooler are through the mb..stock cooler should it at web around 35-40c at all times. in gaming load you may see 60-70c max if the cooler is on right. the stock intel coolers because there all plastic are known to walk out and or snap. the better coolers are ones with metal backplate and 4 screws.

look at ones with good fan range 300-1500 to keep the noise down when there no load.

Nice case by the way and to add to what Smorizio said, check the fan profiles on everything, make sure it's not in "silent" or "quiet" mode, if the temps are getting that high and the fans aren't all running 100% that could be a problem.

Okay then that's at least eased by paranoia a tad. I think I will definitely get a better cooler for it, I'll have to read up how to remove the thermal paste and apply the new one.

Thanks alot for the help.

There should be controls in the BIOS for fan control, but if not there is a program called SpeedFan that's freeware that can let you control it in Windows. I would use the BIOS though first because SpeedFan can be confusing for first time users, once you learn it it does give a lot of control.

Okay sweet, I'll take a look. I am using HWMonitor and that shows for CPUFAN that the rpm varies which i'm guessing it varies for temp?. Anyways thanks for the tip, I'll take a look.

It does vary based on temp, but a lot of motherboards come with fan profiles like "silent" or "quiet", I like a quiet rig myself and have a silent case, but I do like to make sure my silence optimized fans are running 100% once my CPU hits 60C. That's how I set up my profile.

Hi DhiaBtk98, The original plan was to get a aftermarket. However I was really cutting with with the budget i had for this month, so i bought the everything that would get running and will be getting a few more bits next month. I think I will definitely get a aftermarket cooler, Do you know if its hard to remove/apply thermal paste and installing after market coolers?. Intels Stock was relatively easy to install.

Little bit of rubbing alcohol on a swab for the chip... just be sure not to drench it or let the liquid flow off of the top of the chip and then get a good thermal paste, head to youtube for application methods, everyone has their preferred method. Just don't put too much or too little and make sure the thing is properly snugged into place, even contract is important or you might have 1 core running hotter than the others.

I'm keen on all in one liquid coolers especially if you intend to overclock.

Thanks a ton on the help guys, I might have to take you up on that offer DhiaBtk98 :D.

I went ahead and checked if the fan is seated properly and it seems fine. I went into the bios and fiddled with the fan speed, and you can set the fan speed for each heat threshold, so I went ahead and made some changes, Heres a screenshot of HWMonitor, I played csgo then gtav while this was running and heres the results, Not sure if I can up the fans anymore.

the values go current/min/max

Thanks :)

This. Even try setting the fans to maximum settings.

Well intel recomend to keep the fan speed it self automatically , intel made a standard fan to keep the cpu cool in normal use , and here we have a hight end cpu and gpu , ur standard fan isn't made for this heavy gaming use .
speeding up and pulling up the fan to the maximum settings may cause a big noise .

A choice between noise and frying the chip, I'll take the noise, at least until an after market cooler can be gotten.

Thanks a bunch for all the help guys. I upped the fans a little more, but only 85c + is max, the rest is 80% and lower. I played about 10 mins in each game, and toke a screenshot of HWMonitor with core temps and here's what I've got.

Never over 75c i think is really good, but let me know what you guys think. Maybe I need to up the speed more. Thanks for all the help so far guys, I really do appreciate it :D

Under stress and a stock cooler 75C-ish is ok, but I would get that after market cooling solution going. Even an AIO liquid cooler so you can overclock, as I have the same chip and will be getting liquid now that I do. Good luck.
