I would like to change the Snip & Sketch autosave location in win10 from:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.ScreenSketch_8wekyb3d8bbwe\TempState

to

%USERPROFILE%\Downloads

The goal is a more common location for the cache to triage, organize or discard more easily. This wouldn't eliminate having to click the Snip & Sketch notification but would not necessitate saving individual files with unique names. The screen captures are most often used temporarily as uploads to online forms or forums and do not need unique filenames. While the few to be saved could simply be renamed a put elsewhere.

Messing with how windows deals with downloads/installs can break things.

Changing that could also change how downloads and updates are handled. This tends to break things.

Windows isn't smart, its not granular enough to know what to put in that location.
it only has one download location for files, this includes drivers etc. Changing that will break windows.

So if its a registry position, I would at least back it up before changing anything - https://neosmart.net/wiki/backup-restore-registry/

Assuming the Snipping tool is also Microsoft?

Crossed my mind to look for a freeware capture app, and yet instead went with a symbolic link from a NEW directory back to the native autosave location.

Yes.
Snipping Tool is the previous incarnation of Snip & Sketch from MS.

For a freeware alternative, Greenshot.
