News Cyberpunk 2077 Mac benchmarks show most Apple Silicon can run the game at over 30 FPS on medium settings — results vary from a smooth 130+ FPS to a...

This puts into perspective the real performance of the GPUs in M-series macs. They suck.
I can't wait to hear the mac fanbois blame the game for being poorly optimized, rather than the hardware sucking.

Not sure why they didn't use the 40GPU. The CPU isn't the issue. It is the integrated GPU.

My only complaint, is my mobile Asus 17" Rog Strix 2k 4080 laptop and Razor Blade 16" 4k 2024 4090 dies on max settings in about an hour on battery. No one ever talks about that.

Often the weird comparisons to high end GPUs are based on weird of obscure use cases, e.g., there may be one specific calculation where it performs similarly. Outside of that, the claims were always seen as meaningless considering that they never. Made a breakthrough in GPU compute efficiency compared to Nvidia and AMD.

This is really bad.

If I'm reading this correctly, the M3 are basically at 2080 levels of performance.

The M4s are basically 3080 levels - this is impressive for onboard video to be sure but its a very far cry from the promises that Apple made where an M4 was said to be faster than an Nvidia RTX 6090. (Yes, I put a six.)

I suspect that the only things M chips are competing against effectively are AMD's and Intel's onboard video offerings. I would like to see that in a comparison. M4 vs AMD Ryzen 350 AI or whatever the high end halo chip was.

How would an M4 compete with a 600w, 5090 behemoth? Some common sense here guys. It’s like asking a laptop speaker to have more bass than a 100lb, 16” subwoofer.

I have a 3090, but play on my PS5 Pro. It’s more comfortable in my home theater.

It’s implausible for an APU to compete with a flagship GPU that has more transistors and more power budget to put into graphics, but with the M1 generation Apple themselves came out and claimed the M1 Ultra was faster than the “Highest-end discrete GPU” (which at the time would have been the RTX 3090). That seems to have created an association in everyone’s mind between the top Apple Silicon and the top Nvidia product that Apple has not been able to shake.

Check out the Digital Foundry video — the M4 is about 40% faster than the Steam Deck, roughly on par with a GTX 1650. That means an RTX 3080 would be around 4.8x faster than the base M4. The Mac is rendering at 960×600 and 1280×800, one quarter of native resolution.

The Apple M chip is a great CPU in terms of Performance per watt in both Graphics and computations , but How Apple advertise their product and lie about it is the real problem ... I knew from day one they were lying when they started comparing the M GPU against Nvidia flagships , and was waiting for native heavy graphics games to appear so they get exposed.

I doubt ppl here even use their brains u gotta remember that apple macs does not have dedicated powerhouse gpu that can draw hundreds of watts it's an APU designed for efficiency on a cramped hardware also ppl don't buy Mac for gaming it's just a plus to have AAA titles games on the Mac store

People here know that macs are not designed for gaming. but they are criticizing Apple claims that M GPU are comparable to high end dedicated GPU. older "intel" macs were full gaming machines because they used stanadrd intel motherboards and chips and took dedicated GPU from AMD and Nvidia ... After they moved away from Intel platform Mac users couldnt game anymore on their MACS using native windows in bootcamp. So Apple started lying about their dedicated GPU being sooo powerful bla bla bla ...

EXACTLY. Plus since their desktops are mostly using laptop class SOCs with no GPU/eGPU upgrade options mean even their top of the line desktops are limited to 5 year old GPU performance. I once had a mac pro + GTX 780 that was decent gaming computer in bootcamp back in the day....

And even then, unless you had an iMac Pro or tower Mac Pro, the abysmal cooling held them back.

iMac i9 here, and say MS Flight Simulator would immediately put it to full fans and thermal throttling. But at least it's thin and stylish. Right... right?

The thing is that Apple themselves made a big deal out of the Mac as a gaming platform last year, showing off the Game Porting Toolkit and inviting journalists to a gaming showcase, and there was a lot of talk at the time about how games ran great even without a dedicated powerhouse GPU. "We've got the new Resident Evil and Assassin's Creed and they run great, and look at Control hitting 50fps in RT High even when running through the porting toolkit instead of native!"

Now that Cyberpunk 2077 runs natively, people wanna bench it and see where the different models stand compared to other gaming hardware... and if you bought a base M4 because of either the battery life or the low entry price of the Mini, this AAA title getting a native Mac build isn't really a plus for you.
