Hi,

In order to fix my USB disk I need to delete some files but I can’t access it.

The details:
1) 500GB USB hard drive
2) I get Data error (cyclic redundancy check) when I attempt to access it from Windows 8, XP, DOS or Ubuntu
3) I’ve run chkdsk 3 times with these options:
* chkdsk j: /F /R /X /B
* chkdsk j: /offlinescanandfix
4) The final chkdsk test always reports:
* Correcting errors in the Master File Table (MFT) mirror.
* Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
* Insufficient disk space to fix volume bitmap. CHKDSK aborted.
5) Chkdsk has successfully replaced about 100 bad clusters – the last chkdsk did not report any errors in the first 4 tests, just in the final test.
6) In Windows 8 Explorer the disk is visible but has no size info like my other disks. When I click on it I get the cyclic redundancy check
7) In Windows 8 Disk Management the disk appears as RAW Healthy (Active, Primary Partition) but I don’t think it’s RAW - chkdsk always reports NTFS
8) Apart from chkdsk the only other tool which seems to interact with the disk is hdhacker from portableapps.com – when I click “read sector from Disk” it reports:
* A disk read error occurred...NTLDR is missing...NTLDR is compressed...Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

If there’s any way I can access the disk and delete files I guess I could then run chkdsk.

Thanks,
James

Thanks Phil,

Here are the results from SeaTools for Windows:

* Short drive self test - Fail (I can't see any log info for this)
* Short generic - Pass
* Long generic - Fail - the log has about 200 lines like to this:

Bad LBA: 482524399 Not Repaired

I can't see any option to fix the disc in SeaTools for Win. I also tried SeaTools for DOS but it can't see the USB drive.

James

How does this problem solved? I'm experiencing the same thing. The problem occurs during a power outage, and now I cannot access my external hard drive. I also cannot open/mount it in Ubuntu to recover my files but the error says that it need to be checked (chkdsk /f) but there is an "Insufficient disk space to fix volume bitmap" so chkdsk was aborted.

If data is important or critical and your system is already unable to mount the drive then I think it would be better to consult it to an experience professional data recovery service facility. We have good results with WeRecoverData, they might also be able to give you some decent help and evaluation on how to get your data recovered.
