Cycling headline bug?

Just some feedback (actually a bug, but I'm having trouble finding a webmaster in the contacts page).

I'm in the habit of leaving Tom's site open in a Firefox window - along with various other sites - and I do a refresh at the start of a day. Work recently requested that we suspend the machines overnight (well, they said turn them off, but I like the first half hour of each day to be spent working, not restoring state). When un-suspended, the Tom's cycling news ticker doesn't pause between updates, with the result that Firefox starts consuming 100% CPU until the page is refreshed.

Any chance of a re-write of its timing code? Is anyone else seeing this?

Oh, and by Cthulu the animated smileys are annoying when you're trying to type a message. Mostly because they seem to be making the cursor flicker.

1. I do exactly as you do every morning, and I don't experience that, although firefox seems to be even more of a bloated memory hog coming back from suspend. Firefox Version 2.0.0.6

Updating flash seems to help.

2. I am told by the people who run the forums that, the only way to turn off the smilies right now is to disable animated gifs in the browser.

Maybe we should have a profile choice that replaces the animated gif with something that doesn't cause you to sic a shoggoth on the forum devs?

Thanks, Sengoku. I'm only on 2.0.0.5 - there may be a difference, or it may be a flash problem. I'll do some more updates - if it's just me with this problem then I'm not quite so righteously indignant... (and I'll remember to update the page each morning in the meantime).

A profile choice would be nice, not that I post here often (obviously). It's not so much that the smileys bother me - because I can just drag them off the screen - as that the randomly flickering cursor is a little distracting. No biggie.
