D-SUB on monitor vs. DVI-D Dual Link on GPU

Hello guys!

I have an old monitor, that only has a D-SUB on it and I builded a new PC with a MSI GTX1070 Armor 8G OC 8GB DDR5 GPU in it. The GPU has a HDMI, 3 DisplayPorts and 1 DVI-D Dual Link on it.

My question would be: are there any possible solutions to make these 2 to work together until I will be able to buy a decent monitor?

Hi, you'd need an active converter DVI-D to VGA.

This will take a DVI connector and adapt to VGA. All you'd have to do is provide a VGA cable to go from the adapter (goes on GPU) to the monitor.

Be aware that you'll still be limited by the capabilities of the VGA cable.

Why on earth would he need an active adapter?

A 2 cent dongle will do the trick, you probably have one laying around in a junk drawer.

This is teh solution. The 1000 cards no longet output analogue signal through DVI-I like the older gens.

because you need an active adapter which is more expensive, not a passive one.

The DVI-D port provides only digital signal, while D-SUB requires analog. Look for an active converter like https://www.amazon.com/gofanco%C2%AE-DVI-D-Active-Converter-compatibility/dp/B00RWFT8NG or similar.

Sorry guys. I gave bad information... I wasn't aware until now that the 1000 series doesn't put out any analogue signals.

In that case you probably will need an active adapter.

Thank you for your warning! As I can see the best solution would be to buy a new monitor with a HDMI on it, right?

DisplayPort wipes the floor with HDMI if you intend to do high-refresh, high-resolution gaming. But for 1440p 60, HDMI will do.
