My Dad's not the most technology savvy person out there so I doubt he did something to cause this problem. Out of the blue his computer would get to the login screen and then bsod when it tried to log you in. Here is the pic http://i.imgur.com/EaaiK.jpg of the bsod screen. From what I've read this is a graphics card issue. The graphics card is an nvidia 8400GS. I went into safe mode and tried to update the drivers and now I get a hanging black screen when trying to load windows normally and sometimes I bsod when trying to enter in safe mode or I get this screen http://i.imgur.com/hFQBf.jpg Is this something that can be fixed or do I need to get another graphics card? His computer is an hp pavilion elite m9040n with windows vista. My dad is also paranoid that someone hacked the computer and installed a virus, that can't be the case here can it? UPDATE: Now I went into the bios and changed to onboard video and now nothing is coming up on screen at all.

Once you change the BIOS settings to Onboard Video, you need to change where the Monitor cable is plugged in, remove it from the 8400GS and put it onto the Mobo's VGA port at the Back.

Your BSOD has been caused due to a bad video card, namely the 8400GS. it could also be driver corruption but since you updated the drivers and it didn't work, my suggestion would, to remove the 8400GS from within the Box and get a new GPU, until then use the onboard video.

ok i switched to the onboard video and everything seems fine. My dad doesn't really do anything other than email, so can this be a permanent fix or is it wise to do something about the gpu?
