Hi,
I am trying to daisy-chain a Netgear WNR2000 onto a Verizon FIOS router to get coverage on the deck and patio. I can get to the Netgear settings OK, and have turned off DHCP on that unit. I have set the IP at 192.168.1.200 or whatever (out of range of the IPs the Verizon router hands out), and set the subnet mask same as the Verizon (255.255.255.0). But then the Netgear requires me to provide a DNS server address - I am stumped about what to enter here. Of course, the Verizon router is set up for DHCP and it has a different IP at different times. So I can't specify that address, cuz it changes. So what do I do? You can see I am a bit of a novice at this IP stuff. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Solution
Use the internal gateway address of the Verizon router (probably 192.168.1.1) so that it will get passed to your WAN DNS server address. Your only other choice would be to use a public DNS server like Google at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as the secondary.

Solution
Hi,
It worked.
I set up fixed IP as indicated in my question 192.168.1.254. Subnet mask same as Verizon router 255.255.255.0, DNS as
you recommended 192.168.1.1. Forgot to ask about Gateway - I guessed same as DNS, set it that way and it works. Not
sure that is the best answer. Also changed Netgear radio channel to 7, far away from Verizon. Seems to work fine.
Thanks!
Dick

Right, use whatever the gateway router address is as you have done (in your case .254). Using the gateway address for DNS on the AP router will pass the request to the DNS that is automatically assigned to the main router. The only way to use the Verizon DNS other than that would be to use the specific Verizon address, although they may change it periodically.
