Hi,

I have a WD My Passport Ultra Tb external. I dropped it this morning and now it makes a chirping sound when plugged in and my pc won't recognize it. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hey there, atuum!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your WD My Passport.
The fall most probably damaged some of the internal components on the HDD and judging by the clicking noise, it's most probably the platter. :(
I'd definitely NOT open the enclosure of the WD My Passport Ultra. The My Passport series are hardware encrypted, which means that if you take it out of the enclosure, it will make the data on the drive impossible to recover and you won't be able to access the drive without a professional help.

I'd recommend contacting our tech support for further assistance on how to proceed with this.

If it is making a clicking sound and you cant access it then it is likely physically damaged.
This is where externals are bad, because they allow it to be powered while having a 2-3ft drop.

You can try removing the casing and plugging it directly into a desktop with sata or getting a different usb/sata adapter board. In all likeliness though the drive is too gone to restore outside of shipping it to a recovery lab for several hundred dollars.

If the drive was not spinning when it was dropped, then either the spindle motor is seized, or the heads were dislodged from their parking position on the loading ramp and are now stuck to the platters (stiction).

Does the drive spin up? Is the chirping sound more like a click?

is your device manage detecting the hard drive ?...

Either your HDD is broke you can use 7 data recovery software to recover it. I also had a similar drive not showing up on PC but showed up in 7 data recovery.
