When i browse to certain directories, mainly ones with video files, i get the following "Data Execution Prevention - Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close." I have tried disabling DEP for windows explorer and now i dont get the DEP message, but i still get "Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close." I've had a similar problem with my old computer where certain video files would cause windows explorer to crash, and i believe the same thing is happening here except that my new CPU uses the DEP feature.

Does anyone know the casue of this problem, and also how to fix it?

These are local directories? You aren't trying to run files, just browsing the folders?

Can these folders be viewed from the command prompt? In other words, can you go to the run command, type command, and then navigate to the folders and get the list using the dir command?

I'm guessing you are completely malware free? Have you checked your running processes?

Is windows trying to generate thumbnails of these media files incorrectly? I believe thumbs can be turned off globally, but I don't know the method right off.
 
i can browse to the folder with a command prompt without any problems.

i use Mcaffee Anti-Spyware & Internet Security, plus i run Adaware. So i would say that i am free of any malware, yes.

Its funny you say that about the thumbs. Right after reading your post i went to the folder in question and my explorer.exe crashed (the view was on thumbs). then i went to a command promt and browsed there fine. then when i browsed there again (in windows explorer) my view was automatically changed to tiles. and it wasnt crashing anymore. then i changed it to thumbnails, and boom, crashes again.

so youre suggestion did help find the source of the problem. and for that i thank you. but im not sure whats causing it. if i had to guess id say it could be becasue i have various types of video files in there, some of them being quicktime. possibly windows cannot generate thumbs for quicktime vids.

i have run into this problem before though with certain xvids also, so im not sure exactly what causes it, but id bet on the fact that the thumbs have something to do with it.

i dont wanna disable thumbs completely because i use them for pictures, but i havent run into the problem anywhere except video directories. so for right now id say the problem is solved.

:idea: I had a similar problem once, all it took to fix it for me was deleting the thumbnail temp files and letting windows regenerate them. Don't know if that will help though. Hope it does.
 
I encounterd the exact same problem, after I downloaded video clips. When I tried to open the folder, explorer puked.

I found the solution to be the following: right click on the folder, select "properties". On the "general" tab, click on the "Advanced..." button. De-select "For Fast Searching, Allow Indexing Service to Index This Folder".

Problem Solved.
 
I had the Prob this solved it for me look down the bottom of this page after the dotted line it tells you how to stop it but you have to reboot after doing it.

Understanding Data Execution PreventionData Execution Prevention (DEP) helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats that attack by running (executing) malicious code from memory locations that only Windows and other programs should use. This type of threat causes damage by taking over one or more memory locations in use by a program. Then it spreads and harms other programs, files, and even your e-mail contacts.

Unlike a firewall or antivirus program, DEP does not help prevent harmful programs from being installed on your computer. Instead, it monitors your programs to determine if they use system memory safely. To do this, DEP software works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as "non-executable". If a program tries to run code—malicious or not—from a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you.

Is it safe to run a program again if DEP has closed it?

In cases where a program does not run correctly with DEP turned on, you can reduce security risks by getting a DEP-compatible version of the program from the software publisher. How can I tell if DEP is available on my computer?

To open System Properties, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
Click the Advanced tab and, under Performance, click Settings.
Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
Note

By default, DEP is only turned on for essential Windows operating system programs and services. To help protect more programs with DEP, select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
 
If you see windows explorer in the dep box tick it and it will stop the explorer shutdown when trying to open video files, dont forget to apply it and then reboot.

Do not disable DEP. This is not caused by DEP. Explorer would have crashed anyway, just without the DEP-message.
 
Sorry, disable the DEP for troubleshooting. I had a similar problem with a lexmark printer software and that fixed it. i removed the lexmark software and then enabled the "important" DEP. Anywho Have you tried creating another account and check to see if the new account has the same problem under that user profile? If it doesn't try backing up your data and then deleting your profile (start fresh). That way you don't have to reinstall your applicatoins.
 
The simple solution....

In internet explorer go to...

Tools--> internet options--> Advanced (Tab)--> (under) Security--> uncheck "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks"

Click OK.

Close Explorer, restart computer.. 😀

similar problem. i will tell you why it occurs?
well all i discovered is that explorer.exe in task manager ( press keys ctrl+alt+del) is continously eating up memory. and at a time when it eats around 120,000kb of ram(memory), the data execution prevention message pop-ups to kill the explorer.exe and starts it freshly. you can watch out through your own eyes, when the problem occurs, view the task manager ignoring all other programs.

I have encountered the same problem AFTER I added videos I made from my own camcorder. The first 3 were fine... 4th one made explorer crash. Then got new computer and moved old downloaded avi's.... that folder crashed too.

Trying to find out what causes the problem I came across this site.... not knowing what I'm doing I wasn't about to try any of the complicated sounding fixes.
There is an easy one.... that anyone... including novices like me can manage tho:

When you open the folder that gives you the warning window.... ignore the warning.... you can drag it out of the way... then make sure the file is active, not the warning window... go up to "file" choose something else instead of thumbnails..... close the window.... then close the warning one.
Now try to open that folder again..... no more warning message..... voila.... problem solved the easy.... non tech way :)

I'm having the same problem with folders that have videos, only I haven't been using thumbnails. What else could be causing it. It seems like whenever I go into one of the folders the whole computer bogs way down, and eventually after about 5 minutes I get the Data Execution Prevention - Windows Explorer message.
 






If you are install any media player then first uninstall the media player after that check it
 
please can you stop/ or making my computer d effect ie problem may be slove and it can be stop every spread data prevent explorer
 
Thank goodness I found this thread! This problem just started happening to me yesterday. I've had my HP Compaq Pro 6005 Microtower (WinXP Sp3) for about 6 months and nothing like this has ever happened. Yesterday I downloaded and installed two programs, one a streaming video recorder to enable capture of videos on Vimeo.com. The other a comic book reader to enable viewing of .cbr files (the one I've been using for a long time quit display), which also required the download and install of Microsoft .NET Framework 4. I captured some Vimeo video (it captures in mpg4 format), tried to load it into Pinnacle Studio (my video editing app) which it wouldn't do. I converted the mpg4 into an avi. Studio still wouldn't "see" it (no thumbnail). I navigated to the folder (which was in Thumb View) and Explorer crashed with the DEP message. After many crashes I finally figured out that I needed to go to Tile or Icon View. This stopped the crashing when opening the folder BUT I still get crashing when I highlight or double click the icon to open it. Any video files I have downloaded (avi, flv, wmv, mov etc) are fine, no crashes. It's only captured video or video I have transfered from my videocam or vcr that seems to be affected. I even rendered a captured mpg into an avi file with Studio, but still the avi file causes explorer to crash.

I should add I can play these files with a media player (Winamp is my default player) from the File>Open File drop down command and then browse to the folder and then double click to open.

From what I've been reading DEP is stopping the execution of a program that runs from a protected section of memory. Does that mean I have a virus or malware trying to run when I click on an mpg or avi file?

Why did this just start happening? Being suspicious I uninstalled the streaming video capture recorder and the .cbr viewer and the .NET Framework 4, but the problem persists.

This may be a related symptom: I've just recently reinstalled Pinnacle Studio after a few years of being in between computers. Upon using it I noticed video thumbnails were black and not displaying the frame and thumbnails were not displaying in the dvd menu editing space. At the Pinnacle webbooards it was revealed that Microsoft Security update KB975560 (released Feb 2010) was the culprit. Uninstalling this update restored the display of thumbnails in Studio.

Could this be related? Could a recent Microsoft update be causing this DEP problem? It all seems so tied up with video files and thumbnail display.

Sorry for the very long post.
