Hi all, i posted this in another part o the forum

I posted a while back about a problem with XP trying to install " PCI standard memory controllers ". I had upgraded to a SATA drive and was trying to get it to work, updating bois and drivers, since when the PCI problem started. SATA drive is now no more, its place taken by a less fiesty IDE drive, but still the PCI problem is there. It caused no problems that i was aware of, so i disabled the 5 PCI memory tabs in Device manager and carried on, happy now everything was working again. You see the PCI problem was that every tiem windows tried to install them it showed a progress bar and then " PCI standard memory controller " with under it " Error installing , the data is invalid".

Now i got bitten by the update bugg again, and upgraded my old doddering GeForce 4600 Ti with ...... a GeForce 6800 GT mmmmm, and yes i did have to upgrade my PSU to a 460w one.

Now my problem is that though i try to install the drivers for this piece o meat, the card wont respond to it, AND when i start up, i get XP trying to install it then " There has been an error while installing " " The Data is Invalid "

I wasnt quite sure where t post this, so, here it is. If anyone is lookin for a problem t get on with, i had a windows expert lookin into the last PCI memory problem and the sata prolbem, niether of which were sorted, not avin a go at them, the were very helpfull.... but didnt help lol.

Now im fairly sure, though trying my graphics card out on another comp, that its not the card or the drivers. Im thinkin its the Mobo, BIOS, or an evil spirit sent to spiral me into madness, and, to be fair, if its the last one its doing a pretty bloody good job off it.

I`m not sure, even after reading several very confusing forums and sites, how exactly to change my bois back to the originals, or just older ones, or damn any different ones , jus t find if its that.

I wouldnt really want to have to get a new mobo, cuz, reall y, that would mean gettin a new cpu, but....

My set up is

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2.0Ghz cpu
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo rev 1.04
Corsair seleect value PC3400 512mb

Thanks

Not really. You could just get an Abit NF7-S or something... They're fairly cheap nowadays.

It sounds like your mobo has always been a bit sick.

Thats probly true. Though i was thinking i would get it fixed, the pc, but if i do that, how much will it cost and would i not just b better off upgradin right now? with that G card, the cpu and maybe size of the memory would hold it back right?

It wouldn't be too much of a bottleneck - It's all fairly decent stuff really. A Complete RAM, CPU, Motherboard overhaul would give a better performing machine, but it wouldn't be that much better. Your CPU is perfectly adequate for all modern games. (see my sig - I don't have problems running anything quite well, including DoomIII, and your GPU is considerably faster than mine)

It all comes down to money at the end of the day. You can get a good new nforce2 board for $70-$80 (assuming you're thinking in $US), which'll give you a pretty decent gaming machine, or you can get a new CPU, Mobo, more RAM etc, etc. which would cost a few hundred $.

If you have a few hundred kicking around, then go ahead, but if you didnt' have plans to upgrade in the near future then I wouldn't bother.

Just a quick thought - Have you run Memtest86 on your current rig? Just to make sure it's not a duff memory stick.

Hey, thanks for the post, dont know why sometimes poeple look and dont just say somethin, even if it seems stupid, could have been overlooked.

Anyways, i managed to kill the problem, quite like a hunter in africa, i chased it hour after hour until at last the little rat gave out, hands waving in the air in sign of defeat " Please dont kill me" the problem screemed " Haha! " i said " Your waving hands are no match for my plasma gun of intelligence! " and so on and so forth, so to sum up for those of you who werent payin attention,
It was a reg problem, i found a fantastic link on windows newsgroups, told me exactly what to do ( though im really not sure posing nude with a banana and too lemons infront of my nether regions and takin a picture then sendin it to an e-mail addy actually helped the proccess ) and it worked like a dream, somethin to do with files bein read only and not full access! pfhh, gawd knows

Thanks anywho, now how do i unglue these fruits, hmmm, think this is one for another forum.
