I had an old laptop laying around that I want to speed up, so I DBAN'd it and reinstalled a fresh version of XP. I don't have the driver disk that came with the laptop when I bought it (9 years ago) and now I can't get it to work. It's an HP DV1000 laptop. I downloaded all of the drivers from the HP support page without any luck. I know this has a broadcom or intel wireless card, but I don't see either in the device manager. There are also buttons at the top that I can press, and when I used to press the wireless button a light would illuminate underneath of it. That doesn't happen now. Wireless is enabled in the BIOS. It was working fine up until I wiped it. Any tips?

Go to the HP support page and enter your service code or your exact model (there are dozens of DV1000 models) -- that should tell you which wireless adapter it has so you know which driver to download and install. Besides the actual wireless adapter driver you need to install the WLAN utility installer at the bottom of the network drivers; and if Intel you need the Intel ProSet software under software solutions.

There are three possible locations for the wireless switch -- on top the keyboard, on the side or on the front. And the HP Wireless Assistant software must be used to enable or disable the individual wireless functions.

Thanks for the reply. When I bought the DV1000, I didn't buy any preconfigured package. Everything was kind of a la carte, so I think DV1000 is the actual model name. I'll need to track down the HP wireless assistant software...I have no idea where the CD that came with my computer it. Are these items that can be downloaded?

Yes, I think so -- I dug through the network drivers and utilities and it all seems to be there.
