More info?)
Mark,
Previous to crash, system had been operating OK with SP2 installed. All
devices had latest manufacturer's drivers installed. Have found that a
number of other programs and files are now corrupted, particularly many
music .mp3, .ape, .mpc etc files. I beginning to think that, even though
this Windows installation boots, its sufficiently corrupted that I'll never
fix everything. Believe I'll try a repair installation to see if that
solves my problems before "going all the way" to a reformat. Am sort of a
freeware/shareware "junkie" and really hate to have to reinstall most of
this stuff again!!
Anyway, thanks for your help!

Service start failure is some hardware driver problem. My try at finding
something would be 'roll back driver (device manager,
device properties, driver tab, button) SP2 probably put in a new driver.
Not all old hardware is running within SP2's new security settings, and many
Other Equipment Manufacturers(OEM) are issuing new
drivers for SP2..
