I am running Windows 10 on a Think Pad Edge laptop that upgraded itself (without telling me) in the update process from Windows 7 several months ago. Now upon booting up I am getting a dialoge error box right after boot up that reads: "C:\Program files (x86)\Think pad\Utilities\PLUMTR64.dll" is not found.

I have no idea what this file does, but I recall there is a way to replace a single currupted file through a process of partial re-installation or partial restore, but I do not recall how. Windows 10 as I rummaged around a while to see how I might do this looks completely different and I am afraid of replacing other things in such a process and cause further problems.

The computer runs okay without this file but again I don't know what it does. I have had some small freezes and slowing down of the PC at times, but this goes all the way back to when it updated itself.

Thank you,
Tom

Solution
have a look in device manager and see if you have any unknown devices

Its obviously something tied to your thinkpad but I can't find anything what that file name online which is odd.

Try doing an anti virus scan, just in case.

search cortana for event viewer
open it up
in left column, choose custom view>Administrative events
expand the window so you can see middle column
find your startup time and see if you can find an event reporting unable to load that file and copy the details in here (don't worry about all the errors here, even a perfectly good system will have errors in event viewer)
Thanks for your reply and ideas. Your SFC scan ran and reported no problems. Lenovo update scan could not find problems either.

Maybe I will search for the file and delete it. Perhaps the system will replace or rebuild it. The computer runs okay on what I've asked it to do since the error upon boot up started showing up; but if something stops at least I will know what it is and reinstall that hardware. (If your not encumbered with knowledge you can do anything ;-)

Solution
I wanted to get back and thank you for your replies and help. This offending file stopped coming up on several reboots after running several scans on Lenovo's site and some I had as a general approach to computer health so it seems to have disappeared under the same circumstances it appeared, and I don't know what it was or was connected with. But many thanks!
