I was wondering why graphics memory goes up to gddr5 while regular memory only goes to ddr3. Is gddr5 faster than ddr3?

GDDR3 is based on DDR2 while GDDR5 is based on DDR3.

gddr5 not overclocked in most modern graphics cards is as fast as some of the fastest overclocked ddr3 but i am unsure about the CAS on the GDDR5 but with that said they work in different ways ddr3 and GDDR3 worked the same but GDDR3 works on speed while GDDR5 works the same on a lower speed because of the higher bandwidth so a better question will be why don't we improve the bandwidth of the RAM standards?

DDR= dual data rate 200Mhz X2 = 400Mhz
DDR2= dual data rate X2, so 200Mhz X2 X2 = 800MHZ
DDR3 = dual data rate X3 200Mhz X2 X2 X2= 1600Mhz
GDDR5 = dual data rate X5 GDDR5 at 1000Mhz = 5000Mhz effective

There are physical limits now on how thin the wafers are and how little space between the wafers can be. This is why there is so much interest in quantum computing and other tech like phase change memory (see March 2012 issue of maximum PC magazine). This is also why the Ghz wars turned into the mulitcore wars, more performance at the chip level is becoming physically limited. We have to look to new technologies to continue Moore's Law.

DDR5 may be available to other segments such as motherboards but there is no infrastructure to support this yet. I expect integration to be slower than on video cards, I have actually seen for a very short time a few cards with GDDR4 memory but it was mostly skipped over for ddr5. But Dram may be reaching the end of its usefulness.
