DDR2 DUAL CHANNEL << what does this mean?

Ok well i have been studying computer parts for 6 months now, to ensure that i get an awesome pc for dx10 for the lowest price. I stumbled upon an article about ram and it said something like runnin ram in dual channel increases its speed and performance... what does this mean and how does it work?
