DDR2 or DDR3? That is the question.

ok, so I'm being given an asus crosshair iv extreme motherboard, an 1100T AMD cpu and 16 gb of DDR2 1600 ram.

My predicament is this, I currently have 8 gb DDR3 ram in my system. So, would it be better for gaming to use the 8 gb DDR3 or the 16 gb DDR2? I understand that DDR3 is better and faster but is it twice as fast as the equivelent DDR2? Which one would be better?

For note, I'm swapping out my current phenom II x4 965 for the 1100T as it will handle streaming with better temps.

Solution
The Crosshair IV Extreme motherboard doesn't support DDR2 RAM, so that makes the decision for you. You will only be able to use DDR3 RAM. DDR2 and DDR3 RAM is not interchangeable.
If you were talking 4 GB vs 8 GB it might be an easier question to answer, but as it is the real-world of advantage of DDR3 over DDR2 is quite small, and so is the advantage of 16 GB over 8 GB.

Which will be better in your system depends on so many different things, the best advice would be simply to test it yourself and see what you find out.
