Okay. I'm new to this forum and this is my first question and might sound stupid as well. Recently I bought Asrock 990FX Extreme 4 motherboard and AMD FX-8350 bulldozer/vishera CPU. You guessed it correct , I'm building a gaming machine. But when I looked at what kind of memory motherboard supports I was a little bothered. I was tight on budget when I bought these two. The motherboard it seems to me to be supporting only DDR3 Ram nothing else other than that. http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/990FX%20Extreme4/?cat=Memory
Does it mean it applies to Graphics card memory type too?? or is it just with the RAM sticks? does that mean it won't be supporting GDDR5 or DDR5 or DDR4 type Graphics cards?? and also the normal RAM? Am I doomed for a poor game performance if I have no option left other than to use DDR3 Ram type?? Kindly be detailed in your answers. I have to buy other things too like FAN etc. etc. and I have a budget of around 300 USD. or if someone can direct me more specifically at bulding a gaming machine with that much amount would be better. I'm okay with all kinds of boards like mini-ITX , mini ATX.

Currently only Intel skylake motherboards support DDR4. Every other motherboard made in the last few years supports DDR3. This is normal ram for your mobo. Older and low end gpus used the same DDR3 ram, but have since gotten away from that with newer advances in ram design, so now use Gddr5, basically redesigned for Graphics. The 2 different ram types, have nothing to do with each other. System Ram is what's used by the cpu and Vram is used by the gpu. So no, just because you are using DDR3 for system doesn't mean it's a limiting factor for the gpu.

What you missed is what else you own for the system. $300 for the entire system including OS and gpu is going to be extremely limiting, to the point where honestly it's impossible to build a gaming machine on that budget, minus board (that 990Fx is nice) and cpu.

The type of memory used by the motherboard has nothing to do with the type of memory used by the GPU (video card). There are separate and distinct from one another. Both (G)DDR3 and (G)DDR5 video cards will work just fine in the motherboard.

Okay thanks guys for clearing my doubts. I will stick to DDR3 RAM type for the motherboard since you say higher than that works only on Intel skylake motherboards. And may be I will go for GDDR5 Graphics card about 4GB. that is 2 Graphics card each with GDDR5 type. By that I mean I will have multiple GPUs and more to overclock and also I could use SLI/Crossfire technology accordingly. Can you guys suggest me two GPU combos for less than 120 USD? Since this is the first time I'm building a pc exclusively for gaming I have a lot more questions that need to be answered by experts so bear with me this thread is going to be a long one. What if I use two cheap DDR3 GPUs instead of GDDR5? Like for example one having 4GB ram and another 2GB which together will contribute 6GB in total. I can buy the graphics card cheap like that and then may be try to overclock them? will that be a good idea? can 2GB - 4GB combo work? or it has to be 2-2GB or 4-4GB?? I see a lot of graphics cards available at cheap price which are DDR3 types hence I'm curious if something like this can be worked out? will it permit me to run games like Battlefield 4 , future soldier at max settings?? or which one you would suggest considering my price point of 120USD?? what can I get for 120USD in terms of GPUs? what you guys recommend?

dual cards at your budget is a grave mistake

if you wanted a gaming machine a 8350 was also a bad choice

>.>

get yourself a rx 460

you are not going to run max settings at your budget, high settings will be playable

why choosing dual cards at my budget would be a mistake??

because at $60 a card there is nothing decent worth the hassle

Sli/crossfire adds at best @70% performance boost if the game is well optimized for such. Most are not, you'll be seeing @30-50% boost, and crossfire is even more limited than sli, with many games having such miserable crossfire optimization that you'll see negative performance.

The issue with the budget is that at @$120, your choices for the best possible gaming gpu are extremely limited. Current $60 cards are Actually worse in performance than a Intel skylake integrated gpu. In other words, the cpu by itself gets better graphics than the $60 board. Even having 2x boards can bring you up to roughly what 1 cpu can do. A decent gaming gpu will run close to $200 and a good gpu is closer to $300,the best gpus costing in excess of $500. $60 will get you nothing worth using, even doubled.
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon RX 460 4GB NITRO Video Card ($134.98 @ Newegg)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 950 2GB Superclocked+ ACX 2.0 Video Card ($133.98 @ Newegg)

These are the absolute best possible cards you can get for close to budget, and they barely break into the 'gaming' category.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KJGYOGG/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=
this has been tested. check out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z19jMvN3PI

ultra settings - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsvadeK3XJY

so what do you think about it? a good purchase? At first when I looked at it I couldn't believe the price for the amount of memory it has to offer. But since its at amazon it seems legit enough , although am going to email them about it prior to purchasing.

rocket league is really easy to run. for more proper AAA games a 750ti is almost completely necessary.

I'd caution you against the GT 740 for gaming. Don't be fooled by the 4gb vram, that card is not powerful enough to make use of that much memory. In that generation of Nvidia cards you'd want a 750 ti at least, nothing lower. The AMD RX 460 is slightly faster than a 750 ti in certain areas, so then a 460 would probably be a better purchase at this time in your budget range.

It breaks down like this: New cards in the $100-$130 range are entry level budget gaming cards. These cards typically can't use more than 2gb of vram for various technical reasons(ie limited 128 bit memory bus). Cards that really do make use of more than 2gb vram almost always have at least 192bit memory bus and also cost close to the $200 range. There is no realistic scenario for a GT 740 to use 4gb of vram, it's just a way for them to sell that card to people who think 'more is better'.

i don't know what it stands for or even if stands for anything, but a AAA game is a big game made by a proper studio with a budget of 50 bazillion dollars, and a crew big enough to take over a country. they often cost 60 dollars when they're new.

New, highly intensive, state of the art, gpu punishing, cpu demanding, gotta have a really good pc to get a good picture.
Witcher 3, Batman, Crysis, Fallout 4, Grand Theft Auto 5, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Starwars Battlefront, Battlefield 1,BF4, need I go on?
Rocket league is old enough and graphically intensive enough to be L or M rated at best, barely harder than minecraft unmodded.

Okay. I think I'm going to get RX 470 but only next month may be. I'm running really tight on budget right now and it looks like I will have to wait a couple of months for my gaming pc to materialize because I have to take care of bills , food and other stuff too. Or may be I will go for some other card since I believe many more will be launched in couple of months or may I could have a powerful one during Christmas sale at cheaper price or something on similar lines. Let's see how it works out in the coming months for me. But moderators please do not close this thread as I have a few more questions to ask.

if the rx 470 ends up being t0o expensive, the rx 460 is pretty decent.

thanks for enlightening me on this one. It sure plays FPS released in 2016 but it seems that it won't run them on high settings or 1080p. only 720p or lower may be with med-settings.

Exactly. 720p at medium settings gets you ppl that look like they were ported over from minecraft or roblox.

It took me 6 months to finish my build, but for the ultra tight budget of $600 (Actually was slightly less) I've got a gaming pc that's good for quite a few more years.
