So I got a new motherboard and ram today and just need some quick help. So the motherboard is a gigabyte z170x gaming 6 and the ram is corsair vengeance 3200mhz at 16-18-18-36.

So my issue is the ram won't run at 3200mhz but is reading at 2333mhz. I tried selecting xmp 1 in the bios but then the computer wouldn't boot.. I also tried manually putting in the clock speed and the timing and setting it to 1.35v (I could only have an even number at the end so it was 1.36v weird I know) and that still caused it to not boot. I heard somewhere that I would have to wait for a update for my bios to support xmp better??

Just wanted to know your thoughts on that?

I am fine leaving it at 2333mhz for now but I payed for 3200mhz so I would like to enjoy the fast clock speed

Thanks in advance

Solution

1. Make sure that your motherboard has the latest BIOS/UEFI firmware installed. DRAM needs to be carefully initialized and the routines for doing so are located in the firmware. DRAM compatibility updates are a major driver of motherboard firmware updates.

2. DDR4-3200 is a pretty hefty overclock over DDR4-2133 which is Intel's native default. Give both the IMC and the System Agent an additional 0.1 volts to work with and see if it will boot.
