i have an asus p4p800se and am having the same problem as the person who posted "help dead computer". i was borrowing my friends digital camera and it was plugged into a front usb. i either unplugged it from the computer or turned it off or on, i dont remember. but the computer froze and would not respond to ctrl alt del. so manually shut down and when i attempted to restart i got nothing on my monitor, no beeps, no anything. ive tried a lot of things including taking out the battery as suggested in the "help dead computer" post and still no luck. did i kill my poor motherboard? any suggestions? thanks

front, i tried what you suggested for the other person (removing battery etc) and have also unplugged front usb, and still have nothing.

was that ports being a perfectly working port that you already used with some other device or that was the first time you were using it?

-Always put the blame on you first, then on the hardware !!!

if your header looks like this:

.....
....

Then, it should be:
rwgbB
rwgb

Where r is red, w is white, g is green, b is black and B is a bigger black wire.

Some connector as the bigger wire, some doesnt have it.

Just check on your motherboard if it is how they are connected.. if not, then save for a new motherboard.

It seems weird that even with a CMOS reset it is still hanging. I am wondering if you are using the same USB device as the guy in the other post. What USB device did you plug in? I connected my firewire header wrong, because the header had 10 pins, and only 8 came from the front of my case. It hung on startup, but as soon as I unplugged them from the board, it booted fine. Also, could you list your computer specs.

Is it really possible to fry a board connecting the header wrong? I would think the board would know if it was connected right, and if not the USB device would not be powered up.

yeah i think i fried it. im pretty sure that i had it hooked up correctly after reexamining the manual. (unfortunately i had disconnected the wires earlier.) but the usb wires are tied to one connector labeled vcc usb-1, usb +1 and grd (rwgb) with a seperate black wire (and there is also a vcc usb-2 usb+2 and grd with a seperate black wire. if they were correctly hooked up in the first place do you have a suggestion?

asus p4p800se
intel p4 3.0
win 2000
1gb corsair dual channel RAM

when i start up the computer all i hear is the fan and get no signal input on monitor. i am going to keep tinkering but unless somebody has another idea, is dead motherboard the most likely conclusion?

First remove the power plug from the power supply. Then remove the CMOS battery on the motherboard. Leave the battery out for a good 1/2 hour. It sounds weird, but some boards retain their settings for a while, even when the battery is removed due to the fact that there is still energy in the capacitors. After that, remove and reseat the video card, and memory. Then put the battery back in, and turn the computer on. See, if you get any beeps at all. If not, it is safe to say the board is fryed. I think the Asus boards carry a 3 year warranty. You will have to call Asus and get an RMA for it. They might have an idea or two, or ask you to try a few things to verify that the board is the problem.

Hope you get it fixed soon. [sad]
