Default client for windows 7

Hello,
I have recently tried to click on an e-mail link. I am denied, the computer saying that my email default client is not properly installed. I am aware how to change the default programs... but I have been more than once told I need microsoft outlook for this process. Is that true, or is there another program that will work?

Windows 7 doesn't come with a default email client. The best bet is to download Thunderbird. It's free and better than what Microsoft provides.
