Question Dell 5680 Inspiron

Pulling what hair I have left out trying to update my dell 5680 ram. Currently has 8 gigs ddr 4 2400 and that's what I am trying to add to make 16. Each individual stick works on their own but when you combine them it wont recognize the 16. Is the 5680 not upgradeable. maybe you have heard of this issue before.

It is upgradeable to 64 GB as per the Dell manual for the 5680. Do you have 1 x 8GB in now, or 2 x 4GB?

Almost makes it appear that you are limited to those configurations only. Odd.

Are you trying this in the same slot?

I have tried every combination I can think of. I have 4 slots 2 white 2 black. the primary ram is in slot 1 white and the extra stick in the other white slot.

I mean you need to make sure it's not slot problem. So if you haven't done this yet, I recommend removing your primary RAM (old) and just try the new one in the three other slots. Usually there should be order to the addition of new RAM (like 1st and 3rd slot then 2nd 4th).

Ok I did that new stick of ram only, works ok slot 1 white
not in slot 2 black or slot 3 white or slot 4 black get flashing yellow light on power button in the 3 slots it doesn't work in, only works in slot 1 by itself

If that's your your first time upgrading this board, make sure it's properly seated in any of those 3 slots since unused slots from the factory tend to need sort of refreshment. I think this would help you understand what I mean (though it's laptop). But be careful not break any of the pins.

5680 inspiron desktop and yes there are seated properly. Im stumped.

I suspect that the Dell board requires the 1st slot to be populated before the RAM will work. Leave it populated and try the 2nd stick in each of the other 3 slots (again). Then swap sticks and repeat (again). If no joy, I'd be suspecting a defective board. You might jump on to the Dell forum and present the issue. There's a good chance a rep will answer eventually.

Yeah, I know it's desktop. I just suspected it's due to the slot being unused. I guess I'd try what @clutchc suggested.
