Dell 660s upgrade

Hi I have a dell 660s with Intel g630 chip. I wanted to update it to a i5 3470 exact chip I read some places that it would be okay to update it my dell has the same socket for it but my question is since my g630 is a 32nm would the i5 22nm fit would it work? Do I just swap them out and everything be good?

I recommend you to upgrade the bios first.. since it's an H61 Chipset. Also should replace the stock 300w Power supply if you're planning in installing a decent graphic card.. considering the H61 chipset and the stock motherboard, a GeForce GT620 > GTX 650Ti or GT730 > GT750Ti would suffice..

It's the dell 660s the slim line one pretty sure it a b75 chipset but could be wrong the power supply is a 220 watt one

Did some research on the dell 660s, indeed chipset is b75 and it's fully compatible with 3rd gen core I series processor. concerning the graphic card I would recommend a low profile GT620 or GT730... but there could be an issue with the PSU. Try the Video card first, if there's any issue you should contact dell for a PSU upgrade as these SFF power supply aren't standard design.

First and foremost to clear confusion, your motherboard is on the B75 chipset; hence supports Ivy Bridge without a BIOS update (to be honest, there are no BIOS updates from Dell anyhow). You simply slot in your new CPU and you're all set. There are absolutely no issues with a CPU upgrade.

The Dell Inspiron 660s is extremely confined for space, hence the lengthier GPU's will not fit inside your case. In addition your PSU is relatively low in terms of watts; however Dell produce some solid power supplies hence 220w maybe adequate. To conclude the answer to your question, yes you can install a discrete GPU; your motherboard does support one PCI-Express x16.

You may need to attach power connectors to the GPU however, which your PSU may not provide. Therefore I would absolutely recommend the GTX 750 Ti. It's small, doesn't require additional power connectors, uses a maximum of 60w and will easily play Far Cry 3 at 1080p (with DX11 support). The GTX 750 Ti is a solid card, whilst also relatively affordable for a "high-end" card.

RE: Cesroc3, I'm pretty sure that the GTX750Ti won't fit in your PC Case as this graphic card is wider than the PC Case and secondly if you take into consideration the power requirement "watt's" required for each component ie: GPU GTX750Ti, CPU i5, RAM, Motherboard, Hard Disk etc, the installed 220Watts PSU, "I know this PSU is quality Build", won't have enough juice to power the PC. You should go with a low profile GPU GT740 and will be ok if you're playing in 720p at Mid settings which is adequate for modern games like BF4 etc and is also DX12 capable..

Okay so I found a power supply to upgrade with my dell 660s but I will need to change the case too. I think it would just be easier to build a whole new computer but I thought it would be cheaper this way. I ordered the CPU already maybe I should. But I like the slime line of it too man would a gt640 do okay with the 220 power supply and play medium high games?

is that chip listed on there upgrade list?? and do you know for a fact that vid card will post on that dell??

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..


you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers

Man I just hope I didn't buy the CPU for nothing then. I will have to build a custom pc from scratch if it doesn't work on my dell. So my CPU doesn't go to waist. I just didn't want to spend that much

Dell psu's are pretty good for an OEM. They are even follow ATX specs now.

no just replace the board with a real one and a fresh copy of windows reuse all you can off the dell if its current like opt drive is sata and not ide things like that .
bad thing with dell they don't want to give no info on whats in the case. nothing at all like what board is it is it all sata ? I guess you got to buy it to know what you got or getting ..
found this --Your Inspiron 660s comes with a 500GB 1 SATA hard so that can be reused

so lets assume the optical drive is sata too so them more than likely its a m-atx board $45 to $125 and oem 7 $90

don't say what memory is in it but you may can reuse it to [??] then when you get a nice vid-card it should be ready to go with out issues

The GT640 or 740 should be ok with your powersupply since it's a true powersupply but I haven't tried this before. You should bring your pc to a local pc store/ workshop and see if you can get the card tested with the PC before making any purchases.
