Hi,

I bought a Dell Dimension 8300 two weeks ago and I would like to know
if the CPU is a Northwood or a Prescott. How can I find this out?

Thanks,

Richard

Check the cache size (should be reported in BIOS). Northwood is 512K;
Prescott is 1M.

Though the Prescott has a larger cache, it also has longer internal
pipelines - the Northwood, though older, is a faster CPU.

What Edward said. Additionally, I don't believe Dell is offering the
Prescott just yet. Only the EE edition on the XPS and Northwoods on the
other Dimension systems (as well as the Celeron).

Check the "details" or "tech specs" or "tell me more" tabs on the CPU
choices for the 8300 at dell.com....

How can I check cache size in the BIOS?

Thanks,

Richard

Highlight "CPU information" and press "enter". Cache should be listed there
as well as external/internal clock speeds.

I have had my 8300 Prescott for almost 3 months! I also have just setup 12
Northwoods 8300s.So,Dell offers both.I purchase through the SB division, the
home division might not offer the Prescott. The Northwoods is not faster in
all areas.I have a 3.2 Prescott and a 3.2 Northwoods.The Prescott is about
10% faster in video encoding! It is not the cpu for playing games! The
Northwoods is about 5% faster there.

So I see (

.. Thanks.

Any heat issues at all with the Prescotts (especially using a passive
heatsink) ?

I do not understand your answer. Where do I go to highlight CPU
information? When I open my computer, I see the bios loading but I do not
know how to get in there to find the info I want.

Thanks,

Richard

F2 at the Dell splash screen. Tap the key once or twice and you're in. CPU
info should be about halfway down the page. You can use your arrow keys to
highlight it, then press enter for details.

Am I the only one wondering how Richard can be so interested in
whether or not the D8300 is "Prescott" or "Northwood", seemingly
indicating he is knowledgeable on "Wintel" PC and CPU
intricacies, yet does not know how to check his BIOS info and
settings?

I never remember the Fn function key thing, but on /every/
"Wintel" PC I have owned/used in the last 20+ years, hitting the
Delete key during the initial part of boot-up has always entered
the BIOS menu - regardless of what function key has also been
assigned to do the same by whoever supplied the BIOS.

Thanks! It worked. I have a 512 kbl L2 cache size which means that it is a
Northwood. It is funny because Prescott has been on the market since
February and they still sell Northwood.
