I have a client whose primary application does not run under Windows
XP, the software vendor claims a compatible release will not be
available for at least 6 months. Their current laptops are on their
last legs and need to be replaced. I've checked the Dell download
site for the current models and all the required Windows 98 drivers
are not available. What are the most current model Dell laptops
(preferably Latitude) that will run Windows 98SE with proper hardware
support? I'm hoping that something might be available on the
refurbished site.

Nothing from the last couple of years has 98 support - from any major
vendor.

Your client really needs to replace the old software - Windows98 support is
vanishing rapidly.
It may be possible, with reduced functionality, to run 98 on a newer
sysetm - but the answer isn't running an old OS on new hardware - it's to
get the application updated to run under 2000/XP.

Can't speak for others on the group, but I'm a big fan of the
Latitude 'C' series (CPXT and up). In fact, I just replaced my old CP-XT
233 system with a nice refurb/off-lease C640 unit that I bought on Ebay.
11 months Dell Gold warranty left, and a heck of a clean system.

I know that 98SE will run easily on the Latitudes. I've seen it.
Your post has gotten plenty of responses, so I think you probably have
similar answers by now.

Has the client gone to his software's icon and right clicked, go to
properties, check on run application as under "win98" or even win95. Might
help.

I agree with Edward. I went through this issue with a client about two
months ago, moving from a '98 version of the clients's software and WinMe up
to WindowsXP and the 2004 version of the same app.

The initial headaches of attempting new machines backwards would only
temporarily patch their problem and would require backtracking/redundant
upgrade in six months.

The OP might want to locate (if necessary) some loaner boxes temporarily
until the client can bring the hardware and software up to date
simultaneously.

ancient DOS Btrieve database structure and from what the software
vendor tells me it is a combination of 32 bit and 16 bit calls that XP
won't tolerate. The application has many modules that have been
updated over the past few years but the particular module my client
uses has yet to be upgraded due to a low number of users. The
software vendor is a small six person shop serving a niche customer
set. The need to replace the software is obvious but in the interim
the client has to upgrade the laptops that are carried by the
on-the-road sales force.

Does the software run in Win 2000?

You might be able to find Win 2000 notebooks.

Rather than try to run 98 or DOS on a new system - and sacrifice features -
you might want to look into using something like vmware, which will let you
run your app in a native environment under XP (or Linux).

No, it has the same problem under 2000 as XP. I'm going to try the VM
concept suggested by Edward.

Thank you for the suggestion, I'm going to put together a test machine
with XP and Virtual PC 2004 ( I have a copy). Off topic but anyone
have any experience of VPC 2004 vs. Workstation4?

I've found vmware a more stable platform, but both should do the job you
need to do.

I did not create these programs, I just have them on this site so if I had
to format and reinstall Windows and I would be able to play the old games.

To get the program to play, right click on the program exe file and select
Run
with VDM.

Hi,
I have a Dell Latitude with 128 meg 4.6 HD (can include a 20 gig if needed
for nominal cost) works very well I'll sell you for a very reasonable price.
It originally shipped with 98 and runs that OS quickly.(probably need a new
battery) I am running Win2K on it now and it works well with that too.....

Consider buying a good used laptop from Ebay. It should hold out for the time it takes the
software vendor to upgrade the softward. Ebay has plenty of Win98 compatible systems.
