I know Chris more or less, so I trust him on this!

To OP, just do the Dells way unless you don't care about your PC. I did not reversed mine, and you should not as well!

I've made a few other changes since I posted this: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/332610-28-dell-dimension-4700-upgrades

My nice sound card died so I replaced it with the original "sound blaster live 24-bit" card and I replaced my 2TB hard drive with a 2nd 7200rpm 1TB hard drive and raided them in raid 0. I already had this Sata II PCIe x1 card installed http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815287003 which has a JMicron raid controller capable of RAID 0, 1, 0+1, JBOD and I also had the extra 7200rpm 1TB hard drive just lying around doing nothing so it was a pretty painless upgrade.

I have to say that while I know that my 4700 is a real dinosaur and it is no match for newer systems, with the upgrades it performs remarkably well for a large number of tasks.

How to do the raid on the 4700 can the 4700 do ahci

You need an add-on-card like the one in the link I posted to support raid and yes that card can support ahci.
Which way is the fan blowing now?

Is it only fan, without shroud?
And here is the difference, not bad for beginning.

You know, I just checked your CPU tower cooler, and guess what - I have the same in my XPS, but since I did not change cooling I don't hear CPU fan at all, even when I was playing Crysis (I actually was able to do so on this XPS at low settings), I can hear my GPU fans and my extra fans, but not CPU.
You must do as advised, this is another example, LOL!

Well I'm glad you got it quieter anyway and "Kisianik" might sound like a pain in the ass, going on and on about that stupid shroud but, here's the thing, he's right. Neither one of us want to see you damage your mother board and stressing it before you have the proper OEM parts installed might not be such a good idea. This is an old PC with well used parts, who knows how much stress it can take at this point.

If you don't really care that much, well OK then but, if you do, use caution until the right parts are installed.

OK, good deal I think you'll be real happy with your new CPU. 😉

I will . Stuff is running good now thanks guys

Good. Considering the time between postings you did not get the parts yet - you just have fan blow inside. Still get those parts, I know I am pessimistic here, but as you all noticed already, I just care too much.
So just take care about your baby, would you?!

What ever has Pentium in minimum requirements, not Dual core of any kind.
There are so many games, so I am not sure what are you looking for, I am into First Person Shooter ones. Far Cry 1 and 2 will work - it has interesting single player, worse trying. Crysis 1, Half Life all I think, those games single player is awesome!
Online ones, I don't know which ones are still alive, never tried World of Tanks, but it doesn't require advanced PC.
I don't know what to say.

I have have a new problem my friend has the same dell 4700 but his is loud with the stock fan and stock heatsink and his cpu is a Pentium 4 520 2.80GHz it used to run quiet and also there is no dust

Well, the only thing I am thinking about is the CPU fan, unfortunately I am on vocation away from my PC with all information, so can not advice about fan until roughly next Monday.
I would advice however, to disassemble CPU cooler shroud and check for dust there, do not remove CPU yet, check MOSFETs - line of transistors right next to CPU between CPU and outside panel.

I will try to remember to come back here. But check the dust again.

It could just be that the fan is old and nearing the end of it's life, If so it will sound different than a fan that is just loud because it's running at high RPM's and the air flow may be less as well.
Have you actually heard it yet?

Thermal paste will degrade over time and its a good idea to replace it anyway but, I've never heard of it disappearing unless he upgraded something (CPU, heatsink) and never applied any. If that's the case he's real lucky his PC still works at all.

Also, any time the heatsink and CPU are separated AT ALL they should always be completely cleaned of old thermal paste and then have new paste applied. You never want to mix the old thermal paste with the new.

If it was clean when you checked - it was nothing there at all, I don't believe Dell would do anything like this, I am not saying it is impossible, but it is hard to believe. Meaning that your friend removed heatsink once in PC lifetime and forgot about this. Without thermal paste, hm, lucky he it did not fried. Put a good paste (make sure that the surface is very clean, with at least alcohol) like Arctic 5 and use those instructions http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htm and report back.
