Dell Memory price

Hello all,
I tried to upgrade the memory of my Dimension 4400 computer. I bought
generic memory with all the right specs (speed, cl, etc). The computer
has become erratic, with some unexplained errors happening once in a
while. memtest86 does not like the new memory, either if I use it with
the original 128MB or alone. memtest86 works fine with the original
128MB.

Anyway, Dell sells a 512MB upgrade for 450$ canadian. My local store
can order some kingston replacement for about $200. A generic 512MB
will sell for about 100$.
My question is: What is so special about this particular computer so
that it needs a special kind of (expensive) memory. Or could it be
that the memory I bought was bad.

Thanks
JC

I buy all my memory from Crucial Technology, the same people who make
the memory chips for Dell. The 512meg for your exact computer is
$88.98 USD.

I would second the recommendation of Crucial.com if it matters any. I've
purchased RAM from them in the past with no problems whatsoever. Plus it'll
be a lot cheaper than buying from Dell directly.

Hullo Clint,

I am from Montreal. I am interesting in buying a Dell Percision
Workstation 370 for mainly graphic applications (3d studion viz,
photoshop, illustrator, corel).

I would deeply appreciate your suggestions, if any, concerning the
configuration.
Especially a video card. I am going to choose ATI because of price and
the amount of memory. The base option is 512 mb, seeing the possibility
of using Crucial service perhaps it would be prefered to triple it?
Thank you in advance.

I'm up in Canada as well as the original poster (I'm assuming), and I'll
third the recommendation of buying from Crucial. Knock on wood, never
problem with customs, speedy delivery, and good prices. With the current
exchange rate, it would be even better!

Sounds like bad memory or wrong type. About a year ago I bought two 512MB
sticks for my Dimension 4400 from Sam's Club for $85 each and it works
flawlessly.

Every store I call around here tells me I need to buy special memory,
although nobody can really tell me what is special about it. I went on
the Crucial website. They suggest a memory (model CT238741) that does
not appear in the list of their generic memory, even if the memory
CT6464Z265 has exactly the same specs (DDR PC2100 • CL=2.5 •
Unbuffered • Non-parity • DDR266 • 2.5V • 64Meg x 64)

The memory I tried installing AzenRam 512MB 64x64 pc2100 CL2.5 DDR.

Just goes to show you the ignorance of most stores when it comes to name brands!

that memory sounds about right... but perhaps it is ecc or has some other
specialty. have you tried contacting azenram? why not write to them to see
what they have to say... http://www.mobel.com/Neweb/azenramproducts.htm
alternatively, you may find that if update the bios in your system it may
work. bios a06 is the latest version for the dimension 4400 and the release
notes suggest that at very least a06 added better diagnostic codes for
memory errors... (a03 provided support for hard disks over 128gb and that is
certainly a motivation to upgrade the bios to the latest version if not
already at that level).
