Dell Memory Upgrade Result, Interpretation Please

Hi -

I upgraded Dell 1545 Memory with Crucial 8 GB Kit (4 GBx2) DDR2 800 MHz (PC2-6400) CL6 SODIMM 200-PIN and following is the result. I am curious to know whether this is expected, with such high latency rate ?

Memory1: DDR2-399(798) MHz, Dual Symmetric Channel(6-6-6-18-**T)

Memory-Copy: 5490 MByte/sec.
Memory-Read: 6130 MByte/sec.
Memory-Write: 5414 MByte/sec.
Reached Memory Score: 5.77 GB/sec
Memory-Latency: 83.8 ns.
Reached Latency Score: 83.8 ns

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 8GB
Currently Installed Memory: 8GB
Total Memory Slots: 2
Available Memory Slots: 0

Could you plese tell, is there any mismatch between RAM modules, I purchased, please note above one is PC2-6400 and other one PC2-5300 ? Do appreciate very much .

If you mix that two set RAM, then the RAM speed will only run at 667Mhz (lowest speed) instead of 800Mhz. But you will not notice the difference in the real world usage. Some time the computer will not boot when you mix the different speed /timing RAM.

You have broken rule #1 for memory upgrades. Don't mix type, brand or speeds.
Memory speed and timings are set by your motherboard/processor combination. Memory is sold at the fastest advertised speed that it work properly at, not at the speed it will actually run when you plug it in. Mixing memory types and brands many times will not work at all, and if it does work, your motherboard will set everything to match the speed of the slowest stick. You can try to manually raise the speed and/or lower timings, if your limited Dell BIOS will allow it (doubtful these options are available to you on a Dell). Sometimes the slower sticks will run at a faster rate, sometimes they won't.

Thank you. I purchased Crucial 8 GB Kit (4GBx2) online from eBay and trying consult you whether I have been supplied with different frequency RAM Modules, looking at above result. Could you please suggest or may I further provide info in order to conclude that, which case I would return the kit ? Do appreciate very much.

Thank you very much. That's not intention - simply applied Crucial 8 GB Kit (4GBx2) purchased online from eBay. From above result, can we conclude RAM Modules supplied are of different frequencies, which case I would return it back ?

I just find out you have the winxp 32bit right? Then you are better to return the 8GB RAM Kit if you can, because the 32 bit Windows systems can't use more than 4 GB of physical memory. Here is from Microsoft: Memory Limits for Windows Releases

If you have one stick of 2GB DDR2 800 (pc2-6400) in the laptop, because the memory1 is DDR2-399(798) MHz, that means your ram's speed is 399x2=800Mhz and you should only buy the other one stick of DDR2 800 2GB for the 32bit system. If you add more than that you just waste money.

I purchased this 8GB RAM Kit (Crucial) eventually change my OS to Win 7 64-bit. Question is NOT THAT. What I am trying to figure out, after running Crucial Memory Scan Utility, it is showing one RAM module as DDR2 PC2-6400 and the other Module DDR2 PC2-5300 (http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=3E9CBA9731D926C3).
The RAM is recommended by Crucial, purchased from eBay and the scan utility is also from Crucial. Putting it simply, do you have reason to believe that modules supplied to me are of different frequencies and I should return it back ?

1) You already have the total 8GB RAM, one is DDR2 800 (PC2-6400) and other is DDR2 667 (PC2-5300).
2) Your laptop only has two memory slots.
3) You have been bought other 8GB RAM (DDR2 800).

The new RAM will fit well with the laptop. But if you want to use the new set RAM you have to remove the old set RAM because there are only two memory slots. And the old set RAM run in the 667MHz because you mix the RAM so that they run in the lowest speed 667MHz. Also even you replace the old set (667MHz) with the new set (800MHz) you will not notice the difference between them. The point is that you waste the money and you are better to return the RAM.

okay so i'm at it again.. haha pretty much the same idea as last time.i want to upgrade my laptop to the highest possible cpu and along with that upgrade max quantity of memory as well as max speed.this is a dell inspiron 1501 with the amd sempron 3500+ processor and currently 2x512mb of pc2 ...

That's exactly the case. And yes I would initiate return process but before that, could you please recommend other test (I mean other than Crucial) I could run, which would publish result on Memory Type (PC2-6400 or PC2-5300) on both slots ( not just the speed ) - do appreciate very much ? That's to double check, because Crucial Support today answered this same question saying :

Thank you for your email. I am very sorry to see that our scanner is reporting one module as PC2-6400 and one is PC2-5300 but I suspect this is wrong. Whilst the scanner can pick up the speed of memory it is more designed to pick up the make and model of computer so this result may not be accurate.

Thank you. I already tested with CPU-Z, two days ago. What vexed me, these are Crucial RAM and Crucial Scanner itself reporting mismatch and when asked they are saying they might be inaccurate - funny huh ?

Thanks so much. Did so, turns out - each slot is PC2-6400, so Crucial was right saying they might be wrong.
On Dell Inspiron 1545, I guess 800MHz@6-6-6-18 not bad or could it be better, do appreciate very much your advise, kenrivers.
