I'm wanting to upgrade my Dell optiplex 380 sff to 8gb from 4gb ram. I have upgraded the graphics and CPU so far and have heard that a ram upgrade will boost performance a lot more. What ram is compatible as many forums all say different things. The motherboard has 2 slots available.

Solution
You need 2x 4GB DDR3 low density (x64) RAM. It will run at 1066 speed but 1333 is common and cheap. Normal non ECC UDIMMs.
If you have a 2GB GPU you can use 6GB RAM with a 32 bit OS, but with 2 slots it's 4 or 8GB. The OS won't see it but the GPU will use some of the xtra RAM for caching.

You can upgrade RAM only if you have 64 bit OS. If you have 32 bit, you stuck with 4GB.

Dell listed only 32bit OS preinstalled on Optiplex 380 all size models http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/business/solutions/engineering-docs/en/Documents/optiplex-380-tech-guide.pdf
So, if you have an original OS, you most likely have 32 bit and unless you upgrade to 64 bit, you can not upgrade.

Curious, do you mind sharing your graphic card and CPU setup?
