I have searched over and over... perhaps I am out of luck.

The AMD HD6450 that I have is what Dell suggests, on the manual it says "Maximum power consumption 20W" and the PCI-e 16x is apparently limited to 35W output. From another site "No PSU cables availalbe."

So... I wanted to work with Unreal Engine and I had my thoughts on a 2GB video card. I thought I found a forum thread which mentioned a 2GB card for this computer.

I definitely possibly bought the wrong computer although aesthetically and in terms of size I like the SFF design. This one has the i7-2600 and up to 16GB of RAM.

One question I have as well is if the integrated HD Graphics 200 is better than the AMD HD6450 or possibly other suitable cards since according to CPUz the integrated graphics is operating at 847MHz core clock 2108MBytes memory.

The AMD HD 6450 had a 625MHz core clock with 1GB Memory, this would seem ridiculous if that was true. I intend to get an additional 8 GB of RAM to go to 16GB. I am hoping I can find some sort of GPU that could be 2GB and work with my computer.

I found this ebay post regarding a GT 610 2GB but I'm not sure if this is just a seller ploy and the seller doesn't actually know if it will work in a 790 sff.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2GB-Dell-OptiPlex-745-755-760-SFF-DT-Half-Height-Low-Profile-Video-Graphics-Card-/121030401315

According to the manual the rails are rated for 12V 17A = 204 W so... what is this 35 W limit?

I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks

F in H! This graphics card is suh-hiicckkk

I just tried out Bioshock Infinite, probably not that graphic intensive of a game but man... such hues and saturation!

Definitely have to replay the original Bioshock games...

The graphics card is nice, I am using the VGA output, I didn't put the LP plate on. So far no problems.

Oh man.. these are SUPER long links... gotta figure something out with that directory

The card itself looks like I have just the right amount of airflow, but you definitely

Yeah I don't know... I think that I'm going to buy something that doesn't work.

The PCI express slots on the manual say 3.3V/12V supported, does that mean maximum?

The power chart on the other hand says the 12V/17A rails... so I'm not sure and the 790 SFF may not match the 780 SFF which is what the reviews mentioned. I'm not sure if they both use the same motherboard.

I saw those reviews I am still concerned as the review(s) mentioned a different SFF model however they mentioned the 240W power supply. I'll give the card a shot, thanks for your input.

How can I mark this as not solved because it is not solved yet...

I bought the card... I'm kind of concerned about trying this, I do not want to fry my motherboard or worst the CPU and other components...

I found this thread here

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/320399-28-replacement-optiplex

and if you do a "ctrl+f" and search "still want to" in order to quickly locate the post by ko888 which mentions this:

"Do you still want to risk the destruction of your motherboard by upgrading?"

Regarding upgrading the power supply in order to feed more power to a power-hungry graphics card.

So... I want to try it... but at the same time, if the graphics card "wanted more power" consequently attempting to draw more from the PCIe slot then I could potentially damage my system which is pretty expensive to me relatively at this point... I still have a HD Radeon 6450 I believe the 1GB version which in the post mentioned above, is below the 35 watt PCIe limitation...

I really wish I could find people who are using cards for this particular computer that are more than the suggested cards eg. the AMD Radeon series that consume less than 35 Watts

Well I guess they aren't THAT great, but they are definitely a step up for me. I was surprised that the AMD HD 6450 had DVI-I and the Ge 750 Ti was DVI-D so... my DVI-I to VGA adapter didn't work, thankfully I have three ports to choose from, although the HDMI cable didn't seem to work... although I think that was before the graphics card update where I was able to set the appropriate resolution for my particular monitor.

Thx. Pardon any misunderstanding. I was trying to find out if greenace92's machine and the MSI N750ti-2GD5TLP GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 is still holding up. Or else boost the ram on my Optiplex 790DT and see if the Intel integrated 2000 graphic are helped.

i7-2600 3.4Ghz (?) 4Gb of ddr3 1333

Continue talking about your machine will constitute hijack of the thread, so I asked that if you created separate thread to post a link to this thread here so I can look at this and answer there.

This is what you said;

I have an i7-2600 790DT posted elsewhere, just looking for some feedback

So, posy a link to this thread here and I will go there....

I am interested in a response from greenace92 and I won't pm him because the response would be most helpful in this thread.

AFA this thread all I see is that it has worked for a month. Thx

Well I apologize, I realize this is SUPER late, 7 months late haha, but yes, everything was working well with the card. Have been running it since, just sold the computer to someone else. No shut downs or anything. I had 16 GB of RAM in there. It's tight though, you won't be able to use the other rail.

All in all this is a solid computer, I think they sell on average around $350.00 on ebay depending on other factors like storage and such. Definitely wouldn't classify it as a gaming computer though, the 2 GB Graphics is not a lot.

If anyone is still interested, I have this optiplex 790 sff, and I put a GT 720 in it.

Keep in mind the psu says it can supply only 17AMPS on 12v. Even my GT 720 (19w) is reccomended on a psu that supplies atleast 20 amps. Although, the manual for this pc states you can add a Radeon HD 6450, so Dell thinks thats okay, probabily my much superior GT 720 is fine too and evga is just overstating what it needs. Its working just fine, decent card.

But a GTX 750 ti, even if it worked for many ppl, will be pushing this psu and may cause problems later, I predict.

BTW GT 720 is the best card under 20w youll find.

BTW the GT 720 is the best card under 20w you'll find.

Way late, but I appreciated the info and will add my experience...
Bought an Optiplex 790 minitower (i5-2400), refurbished & on sale from Dell. Replaced the (lousy, old, slow, noisy, small) hard drive with a Samsung SSD (huge improvement), added 8G ram, and did a clean install of Win 10 (wasted a day trying to get Win 7 updates working, and gave up).
For graphics, I added "quiet" to my wishlist and opted for an ASUS GTX 750Ti "Strix" edition. The fans are usually not on, and when they are, I don't notice it on top of the not-to-bad fans that are already there. Yes, it's power draw is above Dell's 35w spec for their pci slot, but I'm hoping they were being conservative with that. So far, so good.

Thank god I found this thread. I just bought an old Dell Optiplex 790, I was looking for a budget PC that would get the job done as a Photoshop / Lightroom machine (graphic designer here). I have the exact same Optiplex 790 as you (i5 2400), mine came with windows 10 pro and the full version of office already installed which was nice. I have added a 120gb SSD as the boot drive (came with a 500gb HDD so plenty of storage), and 12 gigs of ram (eventually adding 32gb, because ddr3 ram is cheap enough online). I was looking for a good graphics card that would squeeze all the power out of my machine as possible and this thread helped SOO much.

I'm going to grab the 750ti Strix edition as well. I will post photos of my machine once it's all together.
