Hello
I am relatively new to this forum and I posted a support question some time ago but did not get much of a response. I think that I may have made the question too complicated.

I have a number of Dell Precision 490 workstations that have served me well for architectural CAD over many years. They are reasonably well configured with dual Xeon 5160 CPUs (4 cores in total), 16 Gb of RAM and Nvidia Quadro FX4600 graphics cards. Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. These computers are now starting run a bit slow with 3D (mainly Trimble SketchUp) and I would like to update their graphics cards so as to get a couple more years of service out of them. I would prefer to upgrade using Nvidia GeForce or AMD Radeon cards rather than their workstation equivalents due to cost and my past experience being that Nvidia Quadro cards do not seem to perform any faster than their GeForce mainstream cards. I would like to limit the cost to about $100 to $150 per graphics card.

I am hoping to get some feedback from members who have successfully (or otherwise) installed newer graphics cards in Dell Precision 490 workstations. I was hoping to be able to upgrade to something equal in performance to either a GeForce GTX 750 or a Radeon R9 270. From my reading, I understand that there may be some compatibility problems between the PCIe 1 bus that is provided with the Intel 5000x chipset on the Dell Precision 490 and the newer graphics cards which all seem to be PCIe 3. I would be willing to use older PCIe 2 graphics cards if someone has had success with these.

Many thanks to all the members who read this posting and especially to those who are able to offer some advice and assistance.

PCIE gen one two and three are all the same in terms of compatibility. so you can put any PCIE 3.0 card in your slot. in terms of raw power the R9 270 is the best for its price. it would be 150 per card, but it is a most capable card for that price. I have never upgraded a dell precision, but am planing to, and I have upgraded lots of Optiplexes which are not very different and both from around the same time.

Hello Robert
Many thanks for your response to my post. I agree with everything that you have noted but I believe that there is possibly another problem that may be related to compatibility of PCIe 3 graphics cards. I am certainly no expert as all (in fact a novice) but I have tried a GTX 750 TI in 2 different Dell 490s and have not been able to get it to work. I know the graphics card is good as it is now working happily in a Dell XPS 420. The graphics card that I tried is an Asus GTX750TI-OC-2GD5 and the Dell 490 motherboard is version GU083.
I understand that graphics cards are supposed to be backwardly compatible and the GTX 750 TI works fine in the Dell XPS 420 which uses the Intel X38 chipset and has a PCIe 2 bus (I can not determine if it is PCIe 2.0 or PCIe 2.1). The Dell 490 uses an Intel 5000X chipset with a PCIe 1 bus (again I can not determine if it is PCIe 1.0 or PCIe 1.1 but suspect that it is 1.0). That is why I was asking to see if anyone has successfully installed a modern graphics card into a Dell 490. If there is anything that you can think of that I can try to make the GTX 750 TI work in the Dell 490, I would welcome your advice and would be very happy to give it a go.
Again, many thanks for your response to my post.
Regards

Hi I am also new to this forum but I hope my experience can help you.

I haven't got a single issue of using AMD cards in dell precision 490. I am currently using a Sapphire AMD r7 260x oc and according to Game Debate it's performance is identical to a gtx 750ti. However the lack of side fan can be a problem as sometimes when I have temperature issue when I am running GPU- heavy program.
I would say in terms of spec r7 270 is better however I haven't got that card so I cannot recommend it to you.
