Dell Studio 1555 Laptop Monitor not Working

The laptop is a Dell Studio 1555 and has a monitor that is not working - e.g only the LED on it turns on, but no boot screen & etc. Confirming that the GPU is not malfunctioning the external monitor works just fine - the screen shows up and everything. What may be the source of the problem? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

It's the laptop screen itself most likely.

Switch on the laptop.
Get close to the screen and shine a torch at it. If you see a faint image, the screen needs a new backlight.

I agree it is the screen. I am wondering if I need to replace the whole thing. And the funny thing is the backlight does light up, in fact it is pretty bright. But nothing else pops up, not even boot screen.
