We actually still have a dual-pentium 2 server running in our server room - LOL

We don't use it for anything though, its just powered on taking up space and electricity.

But anyhow for the dell bashing...

I've actually only seen a few dells with serious problems caused by dell and components going out. I'm sure other companies like Hp have reliable systems as well but dell is definately dominant in the pre-made pc market.

___
Does this thread have any basis at all to begin with? or did some fool just dl a bunch of pseudo porn that ended up being virus's that shredded their dell and then they hate dell now because they're incompetent?
___

Bottom line. If you build your own, why would you be buying a dell anyhow? (unless laptop)

But when it boils down to the everyday computer user who is only mildly computer literate, dell is a great deal. Getting a modern complete computer system w\ 22'' lcd for less then $500 just didn't used to happen.

I can't say I have had a bad experience yet with Dell Canada. My father has two laptops from them and I have a pocket pc as well as a tower from them and we never had any issues.

I called their tech service once about a specific driver for my pocket pc and the guy on the line was very helpful (the whole thing took less than 10mins).

Sad to see so many people that don't like them (Not sure if there is a difference between Dell USA and Dell Canada). Oh well to each their own.

There is no way someone can disagree with this.

I've actually had to deal with the crap Dell has..Dell uses BTX(by the way,in case you didn't know,Intel said it would stop supporting this along time ago, technically they shouldn't be able to deal with Intel boards? Oh right, they have their own Intel based BTX boards, which suck ass.You cannot put them in another case, and you cannot upgrade them.

Their customer support sucks(Because I've had to use it)
Their cases are made out of plastic.
Their internals are made out of aluminum, but mostly still plastic.
They take 30 minutes to just take apart, forget the 30 seconds it takes me on my case.
They fail in someway in 2 years, they completely fail in over 4 years.
Their **** is way overpriced. Dell is up there with Comcast.
But they're quiet,right!?!!? But they overheat.Darn,I thought I had a positive :/

"The Dell market has ruined all the decent pc system builders out there by flogging dog turds to the unsuspected public which pulls a software mountain that is bigger than Russia...at a the same cost of a hamster in Petsmart "

Yup.

"They are Intel based boards, but some are manufactured by reputable companies (i.e. Foxconn). "

Yeah.Foxconn is TOTALLY reputable.....for **** motherboards.Lawl,fanboy of Dell moar?

the only thing dell really excels at is making cheap computers, everything else about them is subpar. build quality, tech support, you name it.

i guess that's the price you pay for paying a low price :)

Not Soooooooo Fast...I have been in the IT field for over 12 years, building and repairing PC even longer. There no hype with DELL. They build a decent PC for the money. If you can't or don't want to build your own PC then I like them over a few others in the market. BUT the FACTS are that you can spend the same money on better parts, build it yourself and have just as much ease of use. If you can't Partition a Hard drive, Format a Disk and monitor the Loading of an OS than you should stick to buying retail PC's and stop crying when you find out later that they are crappy. I buit my last Desktop in 2002 and it is STILL not obsolete. It was at the time a state of the art Gaming System. It has ahd a couple of upgrades since then (A BIG Advantage to building your own PC's they are upgradable for a long time) New Sound card, More RAM, New video card.. Get the picture. I have now 2GB RAM 512MB Video and Audigy XP Plat Pro. It can still go with more if I want to but I am ready to build a new system again. Heres the drill, Go To Alienware, VooDoo (Owned now by HP), or Falcon NW, Tech or Spec out there top of the line system Full Blown everything and you will reach 8 to 10K easy.. Now go to NewEgg, Tiger Direct or any of a dozen PC Parts Online Stores and pirce up all the individual parts for a build, you will hit a little over 4K.
That's as of Jan 2009. In fact here soon I think Samsung is coming out with 4GB Single RAM Chips..can you say 16GB RAM soon on a motherboard..maybe more when the 6 RAM Slot MB's hit the street.
Theres a beauty in staying out of retail and into the custom builds namely...Bang for thr Buck.

Been in the business for 26 years.. Went through CPM, Dos, Concurrent DOS,Xenix,Unix,Aix,All the Mac OS, Windows 1,2,3,3.1 95,98,me, 2000, xp and Vista... get the picture...

Dell used to make a good pc when they were in cream - the ones with the led display on it in green..
But of late this company has been badly executed selling genrally crap pcs..

Oh yes theyre cheap.. It just proving that when Dell were getting alleged so called back handers that on the hardware they didnt need to make a profit...

Now that they do the quality has gone down hill even more rapidly..

Dell are hype.. Their glossy adverts promise everything but the dog turd that comes...

They had a period of crap ram chips, hard disks that fail before the time is out, Im working on 5 dells right now, the only thing thats good about them is they keep going wrong and i make money on them. I did that with Amstrad machines and they were crap too.

Am I crying, no, I just cant stand Dell.. HP Computers are just as bad.

But hence comments you make are not exactly unkown to anyone with a screw driver, cable ties and a can of Pepsi Max.. Oh Did we know that VooDoo are owned HP, your breaking news there.

We all know that self builds will out last almost anything given the right amount of cash...another discovery there my friend.

Had to add my honest opinion.. I am no pc pro and I previously owned a 'personally built' pc that when i tried to upgrade to a newer windows version completely fried the system and it was dog crap. I own a Dell Dimension and it has given me NO trouble in over 3 years now. Ive called the tech support and gotten nothing but helpful, knowledgeable people that even helped me with someone elses Dell I was trying to fix under MY expired warranty. My only problem recently is finding a good gaming graphics card that is compatible, but Im sure a trip to Best Buy or a privatly owned pc store will fix that. Im not paid to say any of this... where do I sign up for that anyway? And is it really nessessary to rag on people and insult them for what kind of pc they prefer to own???? grow up get a life.

Still have a perfectly operational inspiron 8600 from 2003. It has fallen down a flight of stairs and still works like new. Customer service is the major problem of all big name comuter manufacturers. When my HP dies as it does often I just boot up the old dell and it never fails me. I have also noted that most of the time the problem with computers is between the keyboard and the chair.

Oh here we go..

A new operating system fried the pc that someone personally built..

Well "Buddy" an operating system does not fry a pc and if you think this is the case then obviously suffering from disolusional substances..

"personal" build pcs doesnt mean that they are any good, maybe you were taken for a ride in a bumpy car when you were sold you machine... "personal" built machines depends on the components used and how the pc was put together... almost anyone can build a pc - its like mechano.. Its making it work well afterwards....

I do not like Dell, I do not like Dell as a company ( alleged money rebates ), problematic machines with known faults. Supplying dodgy memory inside machines ( i know cheap is cheap but how can it pay if 20,000 machines fail with memory problems ) propriety usb card readers.. etc etc...
As i said if you read my text, but obviously your still upset that someone obviously ripped you off when all you proberly needed was a fresh install..

Not all computer shops are honest.. Just like any other industry.. Some are good some are bad.. end of..

As for your helpfull experience with your so called pc on the techinical help line this is a 1 in a 100 experience... well done..

I have found dells technical support patronising, over filled with confidence when they know not a lot..
Genrally un-educated. I had a call from Dell once after sending a pc back for repair because it never worked from day one..

Any way, i got a call from a engineer who asked me what parts he should replace in the dell, he went off to say that he replaced the ram and the processor... Well 99.9% of the time the processor is not the problem... he said "what should i do".. replace the motherboard as well, i replied.. i mean what company sells computers and doesnt know how to repair them..

Got another one... Dell dimension - that blew usb ports when someone plugged in the dell keyboard..
nice..

Had a batch of Dell keyboards ( the wireless ones ) that packed up..

Now dont give me that Dell dont make them rubbish as i know Dell buys them from another manufacturer..

Its dell that knocks the price down so that the company making them makes little profit so has to cut coners on quality.. Just like consumer HP machines the quality is not as good anymore..

Its just that Dell started all of this...

I totally agree that consumer pcs made by Dell, Gateway, HP, and any other system builders suck. They don't use the latest and greatest parts. The closest thing I've seen that comes close to my system would be the HP Blackbird 002. It's got a Q9450 with 8 gigs of ram and two 9800 GT in SLI and a Nvidia 780 chipset motherboard, but for a price tag of $3000, it is not worth it. It's probably that much because of the Voodoo logo.

I bought a Compaq Presario back in 1998 for $1600. 2 years later I built my first Pentium 4 system for around $500 and it totally kicked butt.

So, in the year 2000, you built a Pentium 4 computer....for $500? Interesting, seeing as how it launched in November of 2000, and with only RDRAM support until the i845 chipset which wasn't released until August of 2001 (which, btw, was the same time that socket 478 launched).
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2000/12/20/pentium_4_prices_and_speeds/

So, a socket 423 Pentium 4 with Rambus and motherboard for $500 eh? Ya, sure you didn't.

You're just jealous because you ended up buying a crappy Dell instead of building your own.

Oh by the way...I still have my first P4 computer in my basement running Fedora 8.
It's still got the original 30 gig hard drive that I stole from work way back then and 512 MB of ram ( I stole 256 of it from work).
Stealing kept my cost down. I believe I got the Motherboard, CPU, and Ram for around $350.
Then I bought this cheap case and PSU of ebay for $25 and it still works today.

Lol. No, I'm not jealous, I'm just calling you a liar (or at the very least a poor historian). Even if you only had to buy a cpu/mobo/and some rambus, it's still impossible to get that for $500 in the year 2000, let alone for the $350 you're now claiming. Price drops for P4 didn't occur until mid 2001.

most prebuilts are crap dell especially, ibm's, etc i know i was a onsite tech for dell and ibm for years. if you dont want to built it yourself find smaller shop and tell them your budget and its always going to be 10 times better than an prebuilt big company. but i must say in all dells are most likely the worse.

A bit off subject but still in line with DELL issues. I recently ordered a "previously ordered NEW" laptop from their outlet. Instead I was sent a REFURBISHED unit, with a big sticker on the back stating this fact. The Dell website clearly distinguishes between the two, and states that the previously ordered NEW are canceled or return orders that have "never been used", while the refurbished are previously owned. I called to complain and was essentially told their is no difference between the two!!! A complete contradiction to their website. Of course I paid MORE for the previously ordered NEW and instead received a scratched up, used, refurbished laptop. Despite my reading the different descriptions to them straight from the DELL website...they continued to DENY an error had occurred. Finally after two mangers I was told I could return it IF I paid a 15% restocking fee!!! NO EXCEPTIONS. I said forget it, I will sell it on the web and never order from DELL again. Their response, "have a nice day, thank you for ordering from Dell". Simply moronic. Cheat and alienate your customers. Great business model.

Another happy Dell customer...

Sorry to hear of your problems Jimbo11..

The only satisfaction you'll get now is that you have been removed from the poor quality all round which Dell is.. Proof that Dell needed those rebates...

Asus make the best laptops in my opinion. Especially from a repair point of view..
