Yeh, but i might be better of selling the whole build. (Tech show)

Funny thread.

My first computer was a TRS-80 with 16k memory and a casette tape drive.

My second computer was an Atari 800.

I've owned a few and built alot. My last two I built. I didn't feel like building my next so I bought a Dell. It won't be as good if I did it, but it's cheaper and I don't have to spend the time reasearching the parts and putting it together.

1. Not cheaper, people have put toghether nice 300$ budget builds.

2. !5 mins and 1 hour, respectivly.

Your opinion. And I spend more than 5 minutes researching parts for a computer.

The Dell I just purchased this week had a I7-960, 12g 1066 DDR3, 750g hd, 5870 Ati, rw blueray ect for $1427.15

Well let me help you that reserhc.

I7-930 (200$ at mirco center)

Asus mobo with USB 3.0 and Sata 6.0gps (300$)

6gb DDR3, 1600mhz, low latency (150$)

HAf-922 (90$)

Meghalms Rev B for an OC (Something dell can't do) (60$)

Radeon 5970 ( 2 5870s) (700$)

Cheap sata dvd rw (20$)

Intell 40gb SSD (100$)

7200.12 1tb drive (80$)

And Have fun with the i7-960, It's a overpriced i7-920 with a diffrent speed binning. The OC'd i7-930 to 4.3ghz will own it.

You forgot case, fans, blue ray and power supply and you are already at 1700. Building is is fun when you have the time for it. I don't.

Same reason as why I buy the 960 instead of oc'ing. And it's only overpriced when you're comparing it against a 930, not when it's already included.

i7-960=Faceplam

Why not save a few hundred dollars and just do a realy mild OC?

And Case fans inculded in HAF-922.

And Down grade the GPU to a 5870 to bring it to 1400, remove the case, and buy the 120$ Casea nd spu combo.

Ea-650 and ANtec 300 illusion.

Higher Quailty, same price.

And building takes an hour max.

I just bought a refurbished Dell computer. It's a pain in the ass trying to find them for cheap. Basically you have to sit there refreshing relatively frequently until a low priced one comes up but it does save money and it comes with a one year warranty in case it craps out. I got a refurbished Dell for $379. It's got an i3-530, 6GB DDR3 RAM, Windows 7 Home, 7200RPM 600GB HDD, G320 Graphics card, a regular DVD burner, mouse, keyboard, case, etc. I wanted a low cost computer that would do light gaming (some games at medium or low resolution) and web surf.

The graphics card is crap but there's no way to build this for that price. I checked newegg and the processor is 120, the ram is 160, and amazon has the OEM windows at around 100. So there's the price of the system already. Plus if I had to build my own I'd buy a low end graphics card, the case, the PSU, the motherboard, the fans, the keyboard, the mouse, the optical drive.

If you want a budget PC, you shouldn't try to build your own.

I bought a Dell 2405FPW monitor 4 years ago. (not cheap)

Dell now refuses to update the drivers foe windows 7.

This sounds like a company on the ropes.....

I won't be doing business again.

I've had good experiences with Dell. At work, about a month ago, we upgraded all our desktops; about 100 of them. Being a SysAdmin and in charge of IT I'd have hated to build all those.

But yep, for powerful gaming rigs even Alienware, IMO, suck. But for IT; desktops, workstations, and rack mounted servers I'd disagree.

Not in an understaffed IT Department with more pressing issues at hand. But yeah, system building is fun!

Yeh. You could take like a month to do it, seems like an easy ,month to me lol.

(Lazy ass thaty I am, If it was me, I would go realy slow to prolong the work and aviod doing anything else/harder, and I would put in "Overtime" so I would get paid even more that normal for less work)

But the economics of BYO go out the window when you add in the labor cost. If one were paid a reasonable wage to build them, it would generally be cheaper to purchase, especially for the low end machines most businesses use.

You about our experiences with Dell Computers. Just a little bit of background about the company first. It was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell with the express intention of selling custom-built computers direct to the end-user without the intervention of a retailer. So far as UK purchasers are concerned, they operate out of a manufacturing plant in Limerick and another on the outskirts of Dublin. They still operate on the same principle of offering ...
...a Dell computer down at PC World. It’s hugely successful but recently the administrative side has been getting away from them. Our first experience with them was back in June 2001 and, all things considered, was not too bad. We bought a Dimension 8100, flat screen monitor, keyboard, HP Photosmart 1000 Printer and HP Scanjet 4300C scanner at what we felt to be a very reasonable price. There’s an order tracking system supplied by their shippers, Walsh ...

Are you sure you can't use that monitor with Win 7?

Here is an item from the Dell forum posted by an owner of that monitor. He had issues, but only with using the USB hub built into the monitor. Simple answer - don't use the USB hub. Another responder said just use the Win 7 drivers. And still another reported that is what he is doing and running two 2405FPW monitors off the same system.

Where is the issue?

I have a 15 year old HP printer for which I cannot get updated drivers. But it works just fine off a generic driver provided by Vista.

Title for the post should be "Let's start a flaming war." When you make something like this you don't expect people to not flame. IMHO Dell is OKAY for those who don't wanna make their own computer, but yeah you can get a cheaper computer. Dell is for those people who are new to computers or have little to no knowledge about computers.

That's true with a perfect build. But the world isn't perfect... There can be items shipped out at different times, waiting on back ordered parts, faulty products that can take a few hours to troubleshoot, and time spent going through red-tape for RMA's etc...

Well Dell has many customizations to suit your need, if your a gamer they have the Alienware Liveup which links up your computer to the alienware head honcho! That dude might give you a psionic link and upgrade your gaming reflexes during Slo-Mo gaming (F.e.a.r.) or Brain during Starcraft II, (J/K) Check out Alienware's laptop line up or www.ibuypower.com, or www.cyberpower.com! Lots of competition on the market find a company's custom configuration you like! How much you want to spend for gaming gear alot I take it so goto the niche for you!

Yeah ok, here is my two cents. If you DON'T know crap about building your own then Buy a Dell or Even a HP. (HP over Dell, personal choice.) But if your building your own then chances are you have some back round with hardware and software so when the unit starts to malfunction you'll probably have a good idea what’s wrong. (ex. the computer boots and continuously beeps. Memory or Video or CPU. You bust-out your Mother board manual and look up your POST diagnostics error codes.) If its the memory then great because you bought memory that has a life time warranty. Like PNY. Or like your Video Card Fails, But wait my video card has a 3yr manufactures warranty. Or if the Hard drive fails. Damn, Seagate has me for 5yrs at no additional charge, manufactures warranty. ALSO Good thing I built my own, because when my Hard drive fails I already have all my recovery media on CD/DVD so I can Reload my Operating system on my new Seagate replacement drive. If your Dell is out of warranty and you didn't make your recovery disc or your unit was not shipped/packaged with recovery media then, you have to pay for out of warranty parts to get the disc after Dell tries and tries to buy you into out of manufacture tech support. Its only like 30bucks w/shipping but still? I hate calling Dell. But with my PC not only is the warranty service better and longer plus cheaper but My Rig... the setup is just how I want it. I don't see to many Furbished PCs out there come with a RAID setup or a liquid cooled System unlock CPUs for over clocking and Blue-Ray But like I said if you know how to build em then Do it. If not... then you will benefit buying a Dell or whatever.... knowledge is power.

Why Not buy Alienware? It had optimizations that increased performance before and has good quality components overclockable and guarranted! Liquid Cooling kit edition and alot of options for customizing to individuals who want high end gaming! Also if you apply for a credit card and are approved you get to pay it off and build your credit than go for a car loan:) 2 birds with one stone hi end gaming and a credit score raise after you pay it off!

^^ My system was probably less than $1300.00 and rocks my friends 2.3K Alienware... I didn't pay the Dell/Alienware tax and was able to drop in Crossfired 5850's... He had to settle for 2 GTX 260's. =)

His has a an i7, liquid cooling, and DDR3 RAM. But mine crack passwords faster (opencl FTW!) and gets more FPS.
