I recently purchased a Dell T7500 computer on eBay and I am very happy with it. Call it a return to computer assembly fun and excitement for me, as I have been out of it for a number of years now. Due to a divorce, I am now starting to reinsert myself into computer assembly. Problem is I've had some issues with upgrading the CPU in this machine based on some of the things that I saw on eBay, and purchased on eBay. Namely, the claim that the fastest CPU upgrade I could get for this machine was an Intel Xeon w3690 3.4Ghz. I bought this CPU, installed it in the socket on the motherboard, and upon firing up the computer all I got was the blinking lights 2, 3, 4, with the fans just whirling around at high speed. The computer did not boot. The original chip in the machine was a e5603 CPU at 1.6 gigahertz. I read in another Forum somewhere that the w3690 CPU will indeed work with this machine, but I don't know what I can do to get it to boot. I assume that I have to start with updating the BIOS of the machine first. My question is is this a wild goose chase for me, utilizing bad information, or is it in fact feasible? If it is feasible how should I proceed. Thanks for any answers I receive.

The 6 cores were releades later than the 4 cores. It's a different die size 22nm I think vs 32nm. you probably need a BIOS update.
Here's one running a W5590 so W series work. I haven't found a W 6 core yet. Lots of X5690 so the 6 core isn't an issue either. Even some i7 in there.

Here are the builds with that machine.

Sometimes you're the first one to do something.

As I recall the T7500 was produced for a while and it had two Motherboard variants. The first revision is Nehalem only. When Westmere came out. Dell revised the motherboard to work with it. They didn’t change the model number.

It sounds like you have the first revision. I don’t know if it will take the second revision BIOS. I know you could do this with the 2009 Mac Pro to make it a 2010. I don’t know if the same is true for the T7500.

If not. It may be possible to modify the BIOS microcode with the CPU model. There are sites that give help with this. I haven’t had reason to try it yet. Although you risk rendering it unusable.

I've got a lot to gulp down here, and I"m real happy about that: there's more in this little thread that on the entire net, specific to my issue. I'm thanking all of you! Now, off to study this stuff and see if I can get it to work....

Thank you.
