Here are the specs for your T3500. It has an LGA1366 based CPU on the X58 Express chipset. Here are the CPU's that it'll support. Ensure you have the correct Bios for the CPU.

I have recently upgraded T3500 from Xeon 3530 to Xeon X5687 (4cores, 3,6 GHZ). Bought it at ebay for cca. 50$ price. You may consider also W3690 (6 cores, 3,46 GHz). I have just pluged in, with new thermal paste applied and it worked flawlessly. Just check that You have latest bios firmware; A017...

Also I have upgraded GPU to Zotac gtx 1080 mini. Zotac gtx 1080 Mini and Gigabyte gtx 1080 mini are only GPU cards that can fit in, without removing HD shelf. For those cards Standard Dell t3500 power supply 500W is ok (approved from Zotac on my case).

CPU temp stress test: cca. 75C, GPU temp stress test: 65C

My cong: Dell T3500, 12GB Ram, X5687, GTX 1080, 2x ssd, 2x HD raid.
