Hi,

I have a Dell Vostro 230 that I am currently constructing for my brother, but I need to ask whether or not I can get a decent GPU in it. I have built a few PCs before but never in such an old case. The PC's specs:

-Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 (Surprisingly awesome!)
-4(Soon to be 8)GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz
-1x500GB + 1x250GB HDD
-Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)
-250W LITEON PSU

I have looked at some GPUs, and I think the NVIDIA GeForce 630 looks good, but I don't know if the PSU is beefy enough. I know the GeForce 610 does work though. (I like NVIDIA) If my PSU is not enough, could you link me to one that is cheap?

Any help greatly appreciated!

630 or 640 are good also but they are older than the 700 series, which right now is also being phased out soon, the 730 or 740 is better to get, unless there is a big price difference. And keep an eye on the power needs. The 730 GDDR5 may run on the 250 watt PSU, the 740 may not.
What do you mean by "decent GPU"? For what use? Best thing would be to get a new power supply for it first, then get a better video card like a GT 730 GDDR5, 740, R7 360, something in the $100 range that will actually be good for games.

For a lower cost yet still not that bad of a PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026 $20 after rebate. Not the best quality, but cheap and good enough to handle a lower end gaming video card in that computer.

Thanks for the response! Apologies for vagueness!

By decent, I forgot to state what my brother will be using it for. He wants to play very old games, like Old School Runescape (AKA OSRS or RS07) and watch 1080p videos at 60 frames per second. Initially I thought just a multimedia GPU would suffice but I'm not sure.

I presumed a puny 250W PSU would not be enough, but I believe a GeForce 740 Is a tad overkill? Maybe not, I do not know. I do know I need a GPU with GDDR5 though. Are any of these in the UK? Or will I have to get one shipped from across the pond? Shipping is a pain due to my house's remoteness

There should be plenty of GDDR5 cards available to you in the UK. Old games will run fine on a GT 730 GDDR5, and it may even run on the stock power supply although it may not. You can try, and if not, then you can get something mid-range like the Corsair CX models.

Yeah sounds cool, so the 600 series is a no go?
To be honest the 740 looks nice
Thanks again :)
