I have a Dell Vostro 260 here. I am getting a keyboard failure on boot, my mouse or keyboard doesn't work at all, I can't get into the bios, and the keyboard lights don't even turn on (not even for a split second). If I plug a USB in then it powers up and the LED flashes as usual, The problem just really seems to be the keyboard (The mouse too I guess since I never see the laser)

I have tried resetting bios, unplugging and replugging everyhing, tried multiple different keyboards (even tried a wireless keyboard) The motherboard has no PS/2 port to try one of the older keyboards, I reset the bios with jumper switch, I reseated the ram, I tried one ram stick at a time for both slots, I tried with everything unplugged

No matter what I try I can do nothing but crash it with the power button and restart, all i get is a Keyboard failure error =/

Does anyone have an idea before I change motherboards?

Yes I unplugged the computer before removing the cmos battery, I left the cmos battery out of the PC for a few minutes and even got the message that the bios was successfully reset, still got a keyboard failure.

I also used the jumpers on the motherboard to reset the bios, still a no go.

It's just ridiculous, because the only problem seems to be the keyboard failure, apart from that the computer doesn't crash or act weird, usb drives get power, as well as external hard drives... which seems ridiculous to buy a new motherboard just for that =/

Can you boot up the computer without the keyboard plugged in, then plug it back in once Windows has started?

I also tried this, and same result. No keyboard or mouse activity 🙁 - I also forgot to mention that I have tried every USB port on the PC

If that is the case, then the problem has nothing to do with your keyboard, it's a problem with the USB ports on your motherboard not working. That must be a problem with the motherboard drivers.

Yeah I had already figured the problem was related to the motherboard, as I have tried multiple different keyboards and got the same issue. Is there anything I can do other than changing motherboards? Also, you say it must be a problem with the motherboard drivers, but if it was a problem with the motherboards drivers then wouldn't the issue only be present within an operating system? Because as I said I can't even use the keyboard at first startup for the bios or anything.

I am assuming a motherboard failure 🙁

You may be right. Have you looked closely at the USB ports for any physical damage that may be causing the problem? Have you tried plugging the keyboard into the front USB ports? If they don't work as well, try unplugging the front USB ports from the motherboard. They could be causing the failure.

Hey, I also tried the front USB ports and also tried unplugging them from the motherboard, same result. Sorry I tried so many things that it was hard to list all in my original thread. I inspected the USB ports and they are all in good condition

I appreciate the help :)
