That screen is connected to the rest of the device by two hinges that allow an almost 360 degree rotation. As you might expect, those hinges are going to go through quite a lot over their lifetime which is why I thought it a good idea to highlight the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 hinge replacement policy guide. You need to know what is covered and what is not if yours goes wrong.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is a pretty awesome new laptop whose headline feature has to be the 360 screen. It does have some pretty good hardware specs too, like Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake processors, Intel HD 615 graphics and a very tidy design, USB-C and touchscreen. Yet it is the screen that will be the decider for some.

The hinges on the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 are pretty sturdy but they are also going to have to contend with constant use. So how are you covered if things go wrong?

According to Dell, laptop hinges are not covered under the typical Limited Hardware warranty. Any issue with the hinge is considered wear and tear. However, if your laptop is new, or recent, any issues with the hinge should be covered by normal consumer rights. You would have to check to see what consumer rights you have where you live.

Dell goes further to say that laptop hinges are also not covered under their optional extra Accidental Damage or Complete Care warranties either. So even if you buy extra protection, it does not cover those screen hinges.

Essentially, it looks like Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 hinges are regarded the same as the AC charger, cables and batteries in that any failures over time are considered general wear and tear and will not be covered under warranty. It is a bit of a shame given that those hinges are a central part of the device, but not surprising given how much they go through.

If your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 hinge fails shortly after buying the device, this should still be covered under normal consumer protections for product quality.

If your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 hinge fails after what is considered a reasonable time after purchase, Dell will repair them but will charge for the service.
