Alright, so I upgraded my bios and was able tpo put a Q9550 in my xps 720! All the forums said it couldn't be done, but it's working fine without extra fan noise!

I got this cpu out of another machine I just got (for free :)), which has 16 gigs of ram, now I was wondering, what is the ram limit on the xps 720 with A06 bios update?

I've found one obscure thing mentioning it has a max of 8 gigs (that sucks 🙁), and my ram is still showing as 7166mb, so is it actually an 8 gig limit?

I'm also wondering if ram limits are due to the motherboard, or if a bios update can increase ram limits?

Ahh, shoot, I was really hoping to be able to upgrade it like the cpu.

Well, either I'll keep that one or sell it, it should fetch a nice price

Wow, second question on this site and spam.

Yeah 8 gigs does alright, I'm going to get a mid range vid card for a couple hundred bucks since that is the main bottleneck for gaming, right now I have a GTX 260 core 216 in it.

Unfortunately that link is also wrong about the hard drives.

I've got one of these systems (donation from a friend) and there's room for more than one extra hard drive in there. There should be about 4 bays underneath the power supply, and one underneath the card reader that seems to be meant for a floppy drive, it also has 3 empty 5.25in bays under the DVD-RW drive.

I too was hoping to put more than 8gb ram in this system. I know of other dell systems where the ram suggested maximum by dell is incorrect. The Dimension E521 for instance only is supposed to support 4gb, but it'll support up to 8, heck dell even suggests a 2gb stick to use.
