Hi everyone, I need some help with a graphics card upgrade for my dell studio xps 8100. I've had this computer for a few years.
I know a little about computers but my main question is what is the best graphics card I could get? I just don't know what would be compatible with my computer or how to tell.

My system:
Intel core i7 - 860 quad core
6gb RAM (2gbx2+1gbx2) * I will add 4GB x2 RAM (Will have 12gb total)
GeForce GT 220 video card
Atm less than 300w, but Im buying a 750w modular corsair cs PSU

If you need anymore info pls ask, I'd appreciate the help. Also, I am willing to spend 200-400 Euros.

I'd like to get a current card but I just don't know what will work in my system in terms of compatibility and size.

I could give you a recommendation in the form of a list of components I would pick if you'd like. Just ask.
I would say GTX 960/970, but I'm kind of doubtful about the cooling performance. Your case has very little airflow and wasn't really designed with a high-end video card in mind.
If you really aim to get the best graphics card possible, I recommend just building a new PC. The i7 860 might give some bottlenecks and your motherboard doesn't even have PCI-E 2.0 as far as I'm aware, so more bottleneck-galore!

If you're really not that fond of doing so, I'd say you should just get a lower-end card like a GTX 570.

Hi, thank you for your help.

Before sawing your reply I was thinking of buying this one http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1227&pid=2303&lid=1# .

Can you please tell your opinion ?

GTX 970 is slightly better than that one, and it beats the 280X especially in terms of overclocking, cooling and power consumption.

Hi, thank you for your help.

And what do you think of this gpu? http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1227&pid=2303&lid=1# .

According to this, http://www.pcworld.com/product/326875/studio-xps-8100-midsize-desktop-customizable.html, my motherboard as 1 PCI-Express x16 slot, so I think it is compatible.

Sure, it's perfectly compatible. However, it will likely cause a tremendous bottleneck, seeing as how the GTX 970 is a PCI-E 3.0 card, and it wasn't designed for PCI-E 1.0 slots.

King Potato, I agree.. But Im afraid it wont fit my case.. I measured it my currect GPU and how much space I have for a bigger one and the gtx 970 seems to be slightly oversized it terms of Width. I think I only have 4cm of width available.

Ok, considering the issues that you all have raised, what should I do. I have this computer and Im willing to spend around 700euros.
The 750W PSU will cost me around 90€, the 2 X 4 GB DDR3-1600 RAM around 70€, I should have more 500€ to spend.

Thank you for your help and Im sorry for my ignorance in these matters.

Or.. If there is no solution and if I cant reuse any of my XPS 8100 to make a good gaming pc... I can spend perhaps a maximum of 1000€ and build one, but Ive never built a pc before and the fact that I live in an island in the middle of the atlantic does not help much in terms of prices and delivery charges.

Which island, if I may ask?
Furthermore, this forum is excellent if you need help building the PC. Just ask for help, people will almost always be prepared to help you.

Ok, thank you for your time.

I will first research n learn the basics of searching parts and how to build the pc and then I will check some builds that people have recommended here and in other forums.

Im from Madeira island, Portugal.

Tyvm
