Question Dell XPS 9350 overheats on startup

Yesterday, my Dell XPS 9350 kept turning off as soon as I attempted to turn it on. The fans would run at full speed and the computer would POST before powering back off. At one point, I was able to get into BIOS before it powered off and a message about overheating flashed before I could fully read it. It looks like either my CPU suddenly developed a heat problem, or the temperature sensor failed.

I have taken off the back cover and removed some dust, but that didn't help. I'm not sure what to do to troubleshoot from here, so any help at all would be appreciated.

the next thing to do would be to replace the thermal paste on the CPU

have you opened the laptop before?

Yes, the CPU fan starts at full speed. I have the laptop open, so I can try replacing the thermal paste when I buy some.

I can't say for certain, but going off of other (non-Dell) machines' behavior, this sounds like the computer's firmware is detecting hardware failure at POST. The system shouldn't overheat within a few seconds of being powered on from a cold start.
